DVD drive always being accessed

I have an NEC ND-3550A DVD burner, and the LED is always on, except for when a disk is in the drive, or the drive is ejected.

The problem is that the drive is contantly searching for media. I had to take it out of the boot priority in order for Windows to boot (it was always stuck on the "Boot from CD" promt"), and Windows slows down unless there is a disk inserted, the the burner is ejected.

I already tried checking the IDE and molex cables, and tried to change the IDE chanel. Nothing worked so far.

Any ideas?

EDIT: And the firmware is up to date.

I had this problem with my other system... the only way I could boot into windows was to keep the CD-Tray ejected or it would hang at the windowx xp loading screen with teh bars going across...

bump for a good cause :)

This is exactly what happened when I mentioned that Windows wouldn't boot.

Turbo-Productions, what drive do you have?
