Anyone know of any free dvd decoders? I just got a new CD and it came with a DVD with footage of the making of the album but I can't watch it on my computer since I don't have a DVD Decoder.

Anyone know of any free ones?

Media Player Classic has everything you need to play DVDs. As far as a filter that will allow them to play in any Windows program, not really. Last I checked there were some buggy things, but nothing that worked very well.

Windows Media Player should come with an MPEG-2 decoder. If you don't have that, install it. If you do and it still doesn't work, try updating WMP. If that doesn't work, either grab an MPEG-2 decoder (one comes with ffdshow, another is the standalone MPEG-2 decoder that comes with MPC-HC) or grab a player that supports it out of the box (MPC-HC comes to mind).

I actually have a question about MPC-HC. I installed it on an older machine that is running win2k. It plays videos and music just fine , but for some reason it can't handle DVD's at all? Is there some difference between how it'd run on 2k vs say XP? I downloaded vlc, just to check if it was something funky going on with the drive, and it works fine. It seems like I just must be missing something?

Well for one, it's Windows 2000. It isn't really meant for video playback, especially not with software like MPC-HC that relies on pretty modern components. I guess the real reason is that Windows 2000 is missing the DVD Navigator filter that MPC(-HC) needs. I'm also guessing that VLC uses its own filter, hence it working.

I have DivX for a video player. I also have WMP installed. It doesn't recognize the type of file it is or something. I can get the videos to play in DivX but there is no sound on it for some reason. I will have to play around with it more when I get home. I may have just been doing something wrong. Thanks for the info and I will try one of these solutions when I get home. If I can't watch it on my computer then I will just stick it in my xbox.

Another question I have is.... Any software to RIP the DVD to my computer which would then let me put it on my Zune? How would I go about doing this?

VLC player should work as well. You must have a pre-Vista computer? I believe Vista on supports DVDs natively.

Media Player Classic has a built in DVD decoder, as does Media Player Classic Homecinema. If you're using 2K/XP: MPC. If you're using Vista/Windows 7: MPC-HC.

Simple.
