DVD burners...does it matter?

If you use consistent, good media, then the burner shouldnt really matter. If you use a wide variety of media, then you should get a burner thats been tested against all kinds of media. Check cdrinfo.com and cdfreaks.com for burner reviews. I'd go with the Lite-On SHM-165H6S. There are a couple 18x burners out (NEC and Samsung). I recommended them to a couple people, and they love them (after firmware updates, of course).

My vote is for lite on also. I have one of the cheap Samsungs also that I would recomend.

I bought 3 Pioneer 111-D drives for various machines, love em.

They crossflash to the Buffalo 111-L (adds DVD-RAM Writing and LabelFlash), not that I use those extra features but I've found the range of media they support is huge, plus all my 8x media burn at 12x with no coasters yet.

It also bitsets every discs to DVD-ROM instead of DVD+R etc, discs play on everything (The 111- drives make backups of xbox 360 discs with little trouble).

Other then that stuff, I don't think the drive matters.
