My cd-rom burner has quit. It has been off and on for a year now.
Now it just won't burn anymore. So it looks like I need a new one.
and it appears that at this time if I'm going to spend money I should
probably get a DVD.

I have been googling and site hopping for two days now and the consensus
I get for reliablity and price is NEC ND-3520A.
From New Egg for $63.99 with Roxio software.

From Zipzoomfly $61.99 without software.

Whichever I get I will also need Dvd media. Which I know nothing about.

Any comments, suggestions, other places to shop will be appreciated.

By the way I live in a small town on the Texas Gulf Coast and it is about
80 miles to the nearest FRY's. Add the cost of gas to that and it would
have to be cheap to make that trip

Just to add to this thread, I'd also like to know what X is the fastest currently available

you know like 12x 8x rw-+ whatever....

Max speeds right now:
16X for +R
16X for -R
8X for +RW
6X for -RW
6X for +R DL
6X for -R DL

That 3520 from ZZF looks good, for media, go to www.rima.com and get their spindle of 100 8X Taiyo Yuden DVD+R discs for 48$.

Techhead you are obviously very smart in the field of cd/dvd.
I ordered the 3520a and also ordered the Taiyo disks on your
recommendation.
Another guy from Anandtech Forum highly recommended the
Nero 6 suite 3 which is about $10.00 + I am sure s&h.

After reading your two posts about "Sticky" I feel certain that you
might tell me your opinion of this.

You know you remind me of the old movie line " what is a girl like
you doing in a place like this."

I feel sure if you don't currently have a job in the computer industry,
you will soon.

Thanks for the help, Gib

just got the 3520a a week ago. I like it a lot.

Don't sweat the burn speeds too much unless you are going to be copying a bunch of stuff or burning data 'cause as I'm painfully finding out DVD authoring/encoding is PAINFULLLLLLLY slow. The burn time is nothing compared to that. :(

Like, back to 1X cd-rom burning slow (or slower). I was so looking forward to making my own DVD's of stuff but geez it kinda sucks. lol

So far I'm using Fujifilm DVD+R's (4.7gig) and they work well. Play in the xbox, too. (at least the duke vs unc game I recorded did)

Thanks for the good wishes. The Nero 6 suite for 10$ seems to be an excellent deal, it will partner your NEC drive well.
