I recently decided to switch from my Windows encoding setup to my Mac. What is everybody using? I prefer to rip my DVDs first then encode them.

What are some good rippers out there?

What are some good encoding programs out there?

Note: I am aware of Handbrake, FairMount, MacTheRipper. I am having some problems currently with FairMount and MacTheRipper, which is why I'm asking for some input.

Note II: These DVDs are for my personal use, and I actually own all of them. I am just archiving them to my media server for use on the PS3.

You have picked off the good rippers out there. Mactheripper is excellent, but right now it is not a Universal binary, so it will run slower on the MBP. What I like to do to get rips to my PS3 is rip the DVD with Mactheripper to my file server running Ubuntu then use the command line application of Handbrake.

Yeah, that's kinda what I do too. I played around with the CLI in Ubuntu a while back, and haven't gotten my extra box set up with Ubuntu yet, but I think I'll try that again.

I recently came across MakeMKV for Mac and Windows. It seems to work well, but when I try to play the files VIA VLC seeking in the file makes it crash on any OS. I haven't tried them on my PS3 yet.

In your experience have you seen if Handbrake runs better on Windows, Ubuntu, or OSX?

Are you using MTR 2.6.6? If so, give the 3.x branches a shot. They are Universal Binaries and work very well.

I use Mac the ripper then encode (shrink basically) in dvdx2one - its an older program but it always worked flawless, so no reason to change it.

I have also done it through toast 10 tho....and never had a problem with either.
