Okay I've got a really weird problem. My friends and I put a DVD into my buddy's Dell to watch for movie night, but we couldn't get audio. We tried all the software setting we could possibly think of in every single program and in the control panel and nothing worked. We thought it might be the DVD drive, so we put an audio CD in there and it worked when we played it from the DVD drive. iTunes still provides audio as do all other applications and Windows. We thought it might be because we were using a burned copy, so we tried the original and it didn't work either. We tried some other movies and they didn't work either. We thought that it might be the Windows audio codecs so we downloaded a ton of other programs and tried them and they didn't work either. So now we've come to the conclusion that it isn't software, but it isn't hardware either. So we're completely clueless on this one now because it has to be one or the other or both.

Oh yeah, we've tried different ports on the computer and different speakers and headphones and none of those work either.

DVD audio disks? or DVD Video disks audio (like a film sound track)?

Are you using 2.1 speakers? Is it possible that you have it configured to output in surround sound, and thus aren't hearing anything because the vast majority of audio comes from the center channel?

Usually SOMETHING is audible in this situation, but I figured I'd mention it.

It's DVD video. I didn't know there were dvd audio disks. Like we are watching the movie and no sound at all is coming. Example: we see their mouths moving but no sound is coming out.

We get nothing from the speakers at all. We do have it set to surround sound. It sounds better that way even though we've got a 2.1 setup. We've tested it at all of the different configs and got nothing. We watched all of Harry Potter 4 to see if that was what was happening since it has a ton of surround sound effects and got nothing.

it sounds like a dolby digital or dts decoding issue... what sound card is it? my xfi will either decode inputs or not decode inputs (the use of which is a little pointless) :p

I wonder if theres a settign somewhere that needs altering. Also, what program are you using to play back the dvds?

The system is probably set up for digital spdif passthrough. In the dvd player program, find the audio options in configuration, and change it from spdif or 'digital out' to 2 channel (or 5.1 if that's what he has) or analog.
