DVD and CDRW both stopped working

Howdy
Ok I just tried putting a CD game in to play and it did not start up as normal. I got to looking and both my DVD player and my CDRW are not working right. Both still have power to them and the treys will slide out fine so I can load Cd into them without a problem.
Yet they will not run. Looking in the Device manager it says that the drivers loaded up fine but that the XP can not find the drives. Doing the trouble shooting thing is tells me to check to make sure every thing is stiff plugged in right and every thing is. That is the only thing it says after that it says my drive must be bad and to contact the vendor. Well I do not believe that is the problem as both stopped working at the same damn time.
I changed no setting and had not messed with a thing.
The computer never moved so the wires did not come unplugged, I checked them anyway and they are still plugged in nice and tight.
They still have power to them and open up without a problem, They just are not feeding the data to the Mother board for some damn reason. Any ideas ?
 
Forgot to add that they worked fine yesterday as I was playing a game with them. And nothing has changed at all as far as settings or drivers or anything else in weeks so nothing like that is the problem.

Oh and I checked and the Bios are showing the drives there and all so the Mother board seems to be seeing them. Or could that be left over and the Mother board still thinks they are there and they are really not ?
 
Sounds like the IDE controller on your mobo might be fried. Do you have another computer you can put them in to test them?
 
No I just have 2 laptops and no way to put them in them lol.

Well I hope that is not it but if it is I guess it will be time to get another MB. :-(
 
I would first try to test the drives in another computer. Do you have any friends or realatives with a computer who can help you out?
 
Try swapping in a different IDE cable. They are on the same IDE cable right?
How many HDs do you have? If swapping the IDE cable doesn't work, Plug 1 HD as the primary (on the primary IDE controller) and an optical as the secondary and see if it works then. That should tell you if you have a problem with a cable or an IDE controller.
 
say to yourself "To hell with it" and whip out the 'ol VISA/MC/Discover and buy a whole new computer setup.
 
I say try to reinstall chipset drivers, maybe something got correpted. Also put the DVD and/or CD Burner to another computer and see if they work fine....
