Hello, i wanted to clarify how bad dust is in your pc my cousin consistantly sees "smoke" comeing out of his pc. Now i tell him if you dont clean it out it will die, but he doesnt listen! it bothers me so bad because he plays eq2 for days on end. its pushing 1 year since hes baught his dell. is there anyway i could show him or anyone point out a website to help him

Well, I dunno of any sites that have statistics, pics, or anything concerning dust. However, I do know personally that dust can increase temp of components. After dusting my HSF one time, I noticed a ~20*F drop in temps (~125*F before dusting and ~100*F after).

Dust can also cause fan failure on small chipset HSFs. Since they are small and closer to the surface of the HS, they are more suceptable to becoming clogged. I've know a few people who've killed video cards because the HS became clogged with dust which built up to such a point where the fan would no longer move and eventually burn out, causing the GPU to burn up and die.

I would say an extreme case would be heat buildup to a point where dust catches fire. This could be what your friend is seeing, but I would have to say that this "smoke" is just dust which came free and blew out a fan. That is, unless he's smelling smoke when it happens. But he definately should not let the computer get to the point where dust starts poofing out the back. That's bad. Really bad.

No offense, but how lazy is your cousin? It's not hard to dust a comp. Simple can-o-air and 5 minutes and he's done. I know some people are worried that they'll damage something because they're opening the computer, but as long as it's not on and plugged in, he's safe.

If he's die hard about not dusting it, I wouldn't push him to do it. Odds are, he'll experience glitches or hardware problems and maybe the comp will die. I know he's your cousin and all, but sometimes people need tough love. A few weeks or perhaps months w/o EQ and he'll learn.

lol when i turn his pc on i notice the slow glitching and crappy framerates and yes hes really lazy :). i thaught it was funny when we where playing warcraft3 and hes like i need to reboot im like why? hes like oh its overheating. im like LOL retard clean out ur case and yeah... he never responds rofllol
