I found this in a thread on another forum and I thought I should share it with you all to emphasize heat issues.

POSTERdid you use thermal compound or thermal tape to mount the processor ?

NEWBIEno i didnt, i just mounted the processor with the heat sink and cpu fan that came with it. (P4 3.0Ghz hyperthreading)
what does thermal tape and thermal compound do?

First of all, if you don't know how to build a PC, don't. I love when people try to throw shit together and have no idea what they are doing. He buys a new processor and then just slaps the HS on without know what he was doing.

Next is a display of the environment of the PC.
hmm i finally figured it out...so heres the solution....i simply took off my processor...and sucked out all the dust and its fine lol turns out that the dust ball was trapping all the heat within the processor
it was soo hot i could boil eggs with that thing lol and the sticker thing melted on the chip too
but good thing is that its fixed..it was a heat problem afterall

If you can manage to trap dust bunnies under your HS and the processor, you don't deserve a computer. Not only will dust trap the heat and jack up temps, it can catch fire and burn your PC. The slightest bit of electricity can set the dust ablaze and burn up the processor before you know it.

Also, if it gets hot enough to melt a sticker that is mostly plastic, you know your temps are hot and your processor is going to die. Plastic burns at about 1200*F. To melt it requires a great amount of heat.

Also, why is there a sticker ON the processor? It sounds to me like it was on the core like part of original packaging. I don't get people.

I'd venture to say you have no business ranting about ignorance while making statements like this.

if you don't know how to build a pc you learn (LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE).. i think energy spent on this thread could of been spent assisting that guy with a couple pointers. maybe he was a 10 yr old on his first try, if that is the case he is way ahead of all of us.

i'd rather help the guy next to me then assume i know something over him.

*edit* but pls don't take any offense, :)

I had my first computer customly made 5 years ago from this pc shop, and during the second year, I couldnt stand the loud computer fan. when i installed the intel temp monitor, i found out that my processor was running 50 deg C on idle  . Well I went to buy a new cpu cooler, and found out there wasnt any thermal paste between my processor and the stock pent 4 cooler (double  ). After i installed my new cpu fan, with some paste, i went down to 35 deg C idle. To think professional computer shop would forget thermal paste ( or maybe not even know about it?) can be able to sell computers to people (idiots like me XD). Well their gone now, maybe someone found out about their crazy computer skills :D

I whole heartedly agree. That was my point. People should learn, but if they have never done it before and don't know how, they should seek assistance. They should look on site like Hard Froum or search the internet for step by step guides. I know they have them because I have read them before.

As for my comment about the heat, I know that it burns at about 1200*F, I just don't know the temp it melts at. All I know is that first, there shouldn't be a sticker on the processor because it will trap the heat, and I also know that when I put a plastic container in the microwave or dishwasher, it doesn't melt. :D

I'm not trying to bash the guy or say that I know everything about computers. All I am trying to say is that people shouldn't assume that they know everything and go ahead and do it. If they have never done it before, look into it first. I looked at manuals and talked to friends and professionals when I first started. I just want people to be aware that this is hat you have to do. I know it doesn't affect me, but I don't want people burning up new processors or killing new equipment due to ignorance. I want people to be aware of the dangers instead of making mistakes like this person did.

Sorry if I offended anyone.

The "newbie" in this case did nothing wrong, retail heatsinks come with thermal compound pre-applied. He just didn't realize that it was thermal compound.

The "newbie" poster did nothing wrong. He installed the hsf the way it should be installed, he didn't keep it clean, he removed the hsf, cleaned out the dust inside the hsf and re-installed it.

Did I miss something ?
