duron without cooling

i recently picked up one of those super lanboy cases with the $30 rebate, eager to try it out, i stuffed a dirty 250w psu into it, along with a 1ghz duron, board, and hard drive.

here's the problem. when i wanted to power it up, i realized that i didnt have anything to cool the cpu with. i managed to find a heatsink that would fit the duron, but no actual cpufan.

now, i need to decide if i should go with powering it up with just the heatsink, or wait a few days and try to scrounge up a cpufan.

the hardware doesnt mean much to me, but i dont want to kill a perfectly good vintage cpu.

comments? ideas?

im just curious, what kind of duron is this and what heatsink are you using?

It will work for a short time without the fan, but dont expect it to last any more than a few minutes.

get a piece of wire and have a fan blowing on it and it should do the job.

When i had the 2.6ghz celeron i used to turn off the heatsink fan and the fan back of the case made it idle at 45c idle

he could underclock it and undervolt it

its interesting to note that some branded computers dont come with fans on their CPU heatsinks at all. i.e. i have a p3 700 that came in a dell with no HSF at all. ran stable for years and years. dunno what the thermal spec for that processor is, but i know the old amd's run hot according to the people i've known who own then so i'd get a normal duron heatsink/fan combo like this one on newegg... http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-129-035&depa=0 or http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-103-407&depa=0 there are plenty more on there too

it should be fine, i ran a thunderbird (950mhz) with no fan and just a heatsink for a good while and it got hot, but didnt kill the chip

the duron is a malay "DHD1000AMT1B AHHAA 0138FPVW Z9942260241 1999 AMD" it also has 27067 in the bottom.

i'm not sure what kind of heatsink it is. it's divided into two sides, each side having 18 fins. it feels about as cold as the lanboy case. made in china stamped at the bottom. no other information is on it.

I would strongly recommend a fan on that heatsink if you do not have very good ventilation inside your case. The duron will run very hot with just a heatsink.

Try it, Just keep the box open and run prime for an hour or so. Just touch the HS now and then to see if its hot or not. When its to hot to touch and U get artefacts U know that it wont work.. Just don't turn it on and leave it bc then U run a risk but w. a HS on it will heat up slowly enough for U to be able to turn it off b4 it burns

i ran my k6-2 without a heat sink.. the lack of cache makes em not produce much... but my friends 1300 mhtz duron didnt last longer then a hotflash on a silent boost without a fan... all that copper gave me time...
