\ I got a deal at Frys for The proc/ and pc-chips (yuck)mobo combo for dirt cheap ( I didnt think anyone sold durons anymore) . It is not overclocked because the mobo is a junker. -forceasm makes this thing shut down every 3-6 hours. lm_sensors states that the CPU temp is about 40c maxed out while folding and 32c at idle. This thing folds so slow without the -forceasm flag, Do any of you guys run Durons and have you run into this flag problem?

Temps are good . 512MB of kingston PC-133, good air flow.

I think you need to check out the EMIII website and get a program on there that will test the SSE functions of the processor. It sounds like you may have a bum CPU.

If that is the case, I would take it back and get it replaced. If that isn't an option the best thing to do is put it on timeless, although I hate to do that on a daily producer.

ya me too, I think it might be bum too, I tryed that program from EMIII but it dont work with wine ( I run linux )

i have a duron (950mhz) OC'd to 970MHz (on an ECS :( motherboard) running w/ the -forceasm flag.

rock stable.

sounds like you got a bad CPU or mobo

I have a Morgan core Duron 1 Ghz running stock speeds that has had no problems on an ECS K7S5A. It's chewing through a 600 pointer right now.

If you can't find anything to test the SSE functions I would suggest taking it back. It sounds like it would probably be a bad CPU.

Well, the other thing I would check is the voltage for the CPU and make sure it's at what it's supposed to be. If it's undervolting it could be causing some trouble.

They just don't have much in the way of options for overclocking. I have the overclocking BIOS for the version of the K7S5A in two systems and it works a bit. The main problem with it is that his has no voltage options so it limits the overclock a lot.

I probably should get that put on this other ECS board and see if I can get a bit more out of the Duron. It would be nice to be able to bump it up to 1.33 or so as long as it's stable.

that's a good idea; i'll have to look and see what version of the mobo i have and see if you can't send me that BIOS :D

One of my personal machines is a duron 1.8GHz, Applebred core. She runs fine with -forceasm.. my only problem with OCin' her is she's on a POS ASUS A7N8X Dlx. board that won't do crap. With her I've got 1GB PC4000 Kingston ram in her and I can only run the bus speed at 140MHZ.. she wont do 166. I have the voltage range to 1.85 but the duron stock is 1.5 and with the ASUS she wont take any more.. not even 1.525. Oh have I said I hate my ASUS boards.. all of them.. ever.

I had some trouble with SSE on a Sempron chip. The same thing was going on it would keep messing things up....turned out to be a memory thing. The board didnt like havivg the memory in a dual channel setup. I am not sure if that is the case with yours...worth a look ...maybe! :D

I'll sing the praise of ECS, once you get it working.
I had an ECS based 1 Ghz duron with 256mb RAM, till today. This was built in 2000, did not start folding until
Folding@home client
Windows Console Version 1.33

It has been running about 24/7 ever since. Cranking out about 30ppd recently.
Time for an upgrade maybe?
I was going to swap in an Applebred 1.8, bought for $30+ and 512mb DDR RAM.
But wait! I found an XP2200+ bought for my son, who thought he burned the core out, and it just lay around.

Swapped the parts in, changed the multiplier and resumed crunching!!
Frame time cut in half.

Yup, upgrade every 4 years or so. Besides, the heat sink needed cleaning.

So now I've got a new Applebred 1.8, 3 sticks of SD RAM (256, 128, 128), a HSF, a spare case and PSU looking for a m/b.

I run 5 durons;
2 1.2ghz
2 1.3ghz
1 1.6ghz

they all use the -forceasm flag and i have no trouble. I know a couple of them are running on the k7s5a ecs board, has been for over a year, no OC. :(

DR_K13, what speed processor? I have a 1.2 duron in search of a place to fold...;)

Its a 1.8, I am going to try another stick of ram. If that dosent work i am going to try another PSU, maybe thats the problem.

I have a PCChips 810DLU "all-in-one" Duron 1200 that's my main producer right now.
Rock solid stable and I'm not running the -forceasm switch...
the logs say that all the hgh-spped stuff is being found automatically.

Is that stick of DDR a high or low density chip?

I've got a couple of motherboards that do stange things with HD sticks. Some wont boot at all. At least one that I have will pass every memtest out there but wont boot an OS while running HD Ram. So that could be the problem.

Good Luck!
