It came stock at 900 / 1000 and I can only hit 950 / 1020 stable. 77c temps that don't go any higher and fan is auto-ing around 35-40%. Using ATI Tool to check for artifacts. It usually doesn't give 'errors', but does the good 'ol yellow pixelly thing. Any way to get this higher or is my card just not great?

Have you tried bumping the fan speed to 100% just to see if it is heat?

You could try looking for some volt mods for your card. This will probably allow you to reach a higher core clock.

50 Mhz on core and 20 Mhz isn't bad? Seems pretty bad to me  I hear of a lot of 4890's hitting 1200 memory and 950-1Ghz core.
you hear a lot of things but the facts are the average 4890 will not usually do 950 or more without some bump in voltage. even with bump in voltage 1000 is far from common.

no, I been buying at least 6 4890s, all of them can do 950 out of box, above that really depend.

4xASUS 2xXFX ...

but 1 ASUS end up defective on fan after few days of spinning....so I gotta RMA them..

well I said 950 is about max without voltage bump didnt I???

I ran the fan at 100% and went above 950/1020 for a few minutes with no probs, but I wanted to stop because it was so incredibly loud. Guess it's time for a new HSF.

That's great and I hope you realize its a hit or a miss with overclocks. It is not like the manufacturer is like hey your card should overclock x amount if it doesn't lets rma it. Never mind we only guarantee y amount for clock speeds.

Its like tossing a rock in a pond and guessing how many times it skips its all a hit or a miss. If it works fine at stock clocks there isn't anything wrong with the card.

I'm not trying to sound like a jackass but you'd be surprised how many average joes expect their like q6600 to overclock to 4ghz or something because they read it on some forum or some shit.

Haha, I just want to say that that isn't at all what I'm expecting. I was just hoping to get a bit more out of the memory than 20 Mhz. The core at 950 on stock actually isn't too bad. I thought that since my temps were a solid 77c that heat wouldn't have been the issue with why it couldn't go higher, but it seems to have something to do with it. I didn't think heat would be an issue until past 80c or so.

After using fan speed at 100% I managed to get a bit higher so I think with a proper aftermarket HSF this card might be great.

Yeah ya know, like I said I'm not trying to be rude. Good thing about the 4890 is you can mess around with the fan in the ccc. You could try replacing the thermal paste on gpu with something like arctic silver 5 or mx2 or something bring the temps down some. Check out your chipsets too since as the video cards gets warmer so does everything else.

Or possibly when the fab place gave birth to the card it just wasn't meant to be a good overclocker hehe.

Sorry I was drunk yestarday :p

anyway, nearly all 4890s can reach 1G with simple voltage tweak...

not that hard, it just a little voltage bump.

I have to say 4890s finally bring some oc ability compare to 4870 which it oc like crap...

about the temperature, there isnt much temperature increase from my OC, but VRAM OC will definitely heat up very insane....
