I'm trying to get my Prescott with boxed cooler from whining when it's at 0%. The hotter ambient temperature is causing the problem. Initially I helped the whine by cutting a blow hole on the back of the chassis so that it air hit the back of the graphics card and the top of the cooling fan. Is duct work an ok thing to do?
 
it would most likely be easier and quieter to put a decent heatsink and fan on there.
 
Sure why not. I had my 120mm fan on the side panel ducted right to the graphics card and cpu (using water cooling for video and cpu), It cooled the cpu/gpu areas down by 3C. I also ducted the front 120mm fan straight to the memory and it cooled the memory down about 2C comparing to no duct work. Case temperature also improves by 2-3C.
 
What heat sink do you recommend? When I purchased the processor, Tom's Hardware Guide said that the best solution was the boxed fan. I'm running a Prescott 3.0 Ghz Socket 775. I also used some very old Arctic Silver - I think that the Silver has improved since then.
 
fuck tom's hardware in the ear. they said that a PSU that dropped to 2.95 volts on the 3.3 volt rail was still "pretty good." what now? that's just asking to cook your hardware.

they also say that AMD is fundamentally unstable. AMD opterons are what powers most of the good mid-filght current generation workstations and servers. the top flight units are running either more opterons, or specialty processors(IBM power, sun ultrasparc, etc), not xeons.

tom's has said some pretty stupid things in the last few years, and claiming that the boxed intel cooler for the prescott is the "best" is just one of many false statements.

thermalright XP-90, zalman 7700 alcu, thermalright XP-120, zalman 7000alcu and zalman 7000B cu are all top-ranked coolers for good performance with reasonable noise.

the 7000 cu is far down on my list because it is so heavy and likely to damage your motherboard over time, and the 7700 cu even more so.

now, to be fair, you still need decent case airflow, but ducting is not always the best answer.

some AS5 thermal paste, the XP-90, and a panaflo high, BX flavour fan on a fan controller is probably one of the better CPU cooling solutions out there, regardless of what processor you use.
 
sorry, maybe i should back up a bit here.

you said that you wanted to quiet things down somewhat. you did not say that you want to overclock that little furnace of a processor.

you said that your problem is the case temperature. what makes you think that?


what case do you have? if you cannot link to it then please just answer these questions:

is it pretty with plastic bits and pieces, or is it plain and beige?
does it have a side window?
is it steel or aluminium?
how many of what sized fans does it have? where are they?

depending on the case you have, it might be quite possible to mount a fan in the side of the case, to feed the processor some cool outside air.
 
I'm running a no name beige full ATX tower. With all the things that I now have in it, the case is very difficult to carry. I don't know what the case is made out of though. I did it because it has better airflow (I think that is the case). I have 3 HDD and and a CD-ROM. I cut two holes in the top rear for airflow and used to have two linked muffin fans, but they died after about 5 years. I only have one fan in the top now, blowing out, and the other hole I sealed with a patch of very thin cardboard. I did it because it was getting a warbling sound that you sometimes hear from an airplane that takes off and the engines are out of phase. I cut another blow hole on the rear above the PCI x16 slot and put another fan that blows directly between the Graphics card and processor fan.

I decided not to overclock this time because I think that it did damage on my old Athlon 1.0 to 1.3 overclock. It wasn't easy to install the 4 in 1's and this P4 has been much easier. I decided to go with Intel this time because I had to have PCI Express, and AMD didn't have it at the time.

I went to the Thermalright website, and the XP-90 doesn't come on Socket T. Is the XP-120 Size: 120 x 120x 38 (mm) ok? Interesting looking Heatsink. Is it likely to work with future Dual core processors?
 
the XP-120 is great, if your board is compatible. thermalright has a list with some known good boards, and some known problem boards. you might want to check that out yourself.

so, you have a fan bringing fresh air into the case near the processor. unless it is a very small fan, then you CPU should be okay for fresh air, and a good aftermarket heatsink with a quiet fan should do the trick, if everything will fit properly.

now, since you have that fan bringing in fresh air, why do you thought (still think?) that it is your case that is too hot, and not a problem with your current heatsink?
