just nabbed 2 603's 1.4ghz xeon's and a mobo (the Asus PC-DL Deluxe) waiting for it to arrive.... pair of chips were like 45$ thats insane! anyways they're without heatsinks... wondering if its easy to rig 2 939 style hsf's up to cool or should i find some 603 specific ones? what would you guys recommend in a dually setup?
 
mmm, well not sure what id reccomend, but could you point out where you managed to grab those xeons so cheap? :p . Id have to say 603 spec will do it, providing they dont cost an arm and a leg.
 
ebay... gotta love it :) tho for a bit more i saw some 1.7's with heatsinks after i'd already bought the 1.4's bah well.... hopefully they'll oc away any regrets i may have :)
tho oc'ing will be hard without fans..... anyone know a good place to buy 603 spec hsf's? i'll check our distributor at work i spose.
 
dude not to dissappoint you or anything
but for the PC-DL Deluxe motherboard u need socket 604 cpu's
socket 603's will work but only the lower voltage ones as the max voltage on a pc-dl will be 1.6v and most 603's need higher than 1.6v
and if u wanted a kickass ocing xeon you should look for the low voltage 604's
like the 1.6lv or the 2.4lv

if ur 1.4's are under 1.6v then you could go with cooler master cm-01 passive heatsinks
they are the best

yeah I was thinking the same thing. AFAIK the 603's were all williamette based and ran at 1.7V+ while all modern xeons (the 604's) were northwood / prescott based and ran at much lower voltage. I'm not sure the PC-DL is gonna like them. But hey, give it a shot. Just keep in mind that either way the 1.4's aren't going to overclock very well.
 
603's were not all willamette, 604 was just the move to 533FSB. there are 3ghz northwoods on s603... with the 400mhz FSB. All chips that are s604 are 533FSB and higher.
 
well by the sounds of it all they'll atleast work... really 2x 1.4ghz ain't tooo bad... the 1.4's are 1.7v.... hopefully i got luck and have some that'll respond ok at 1.6v :S.... we'll see what i can do... worst case i dump em for 30$ take a 15$ loss and nab some 1.7 lv's or something.... thanks for the info tho..... i didn't know 603 vs 604 were cross compatible!
 
soooo sux2b me..... they won't fire up..... gunna try and nab some 1.5v 1.8's off ebay :S hopefully i won't lose to much in this :(
