I have an Athlon 64 X2 4000+ (Brisbane) with a moderate overclock on it. How should I set it up for folding@home. I used to have it running with 2 seperate instances of the standard console client, but I'm wondering if I should try it with the SMP client. Has the SMP client gotten improved dual-core performance, or is it still better to run dual standard clients?

Also, I'd like to try out the new nvidia client on my 8800GT, would there be any problems with doing that in either setup?
 
You will probably get ~600 or so PPD.

I have a 5200X2 with an OC and I get ~ 750.

What you have is about as low of a proc as I would put the SMP client on.

However the 8800GT will give you BY FAR the most points.

One single client and the GPU (one core to feed the GPU) will give ya ~4500-5k ppd.

Sorry, I didn't quite follow you, are you saying the SMP or 2 seperate standard clients would give me more PPD?

If you are running an MS OS then run the GPU2 client, you'll get 4500-5000 points per day.
If it's Vista, then run an SMP client as well as GPU2, XP then add a standard client to GPU2.
If you are running linux run SMP. No GPU client yet.

Vista is better because the GPU2 client take less cpu cycles, which is available for the SMP to pick. With XP, one core is almost fully utilized so you are neutered a bit.

Vista takes 5-25% so SMP is still viable on a dual core.

Okay, so I should just one a SINGLE standard client, and the GPU2? None of the 2 separate clients I was talking about?
 
In your exact case, it's better to run one standard client and one GPU2 for the best results. A SMP client will surely get over the deadlines.

Is it that Xp shows full core utilization or does use a full core ...??

As we know in the SMP .. it shows full usage but it is not really using it ...

Can anyone clarify?

No, I believe Vista have a better threads management system so it doesn't waste cycles for a thread. That might explain why it's lower on Vista than on XP (it even show in PPD which is slighty higher under Vista due to the SMP client being able to tap into enough cpu cycles).
 
GPU2 under XP actually uses 1 full core. Sucks but that's how it is.
