I'm asking for a new test machine for my job and am being offered a system with the following specs:

3.0 GHz Xeon 800 FSB/1 MB cache EM64T x 2 <- would this be the Nocona?
2 GB PC-3200 ECC DDR2
nVidia Quadro NVS 280
80 GB SATA

Snipped a lot of unnecessary items from the list.

This will be my first foray into a multi-processor system. I will be installing either Windows 2005 Virtual Server or Virtual PC (both will have support for WXP x64 as both a client and host OS at the next service pack of each respective product) as the primary function of this test machine will be to test media on multiple operating systems (most of them Windows-based).

The quoted price was around 2K USD. Is that fairly reasonable?

$2k for this sounds reasonable. I might suggest VMware for lower level emulation, but you know what you're using it for better than I.

Thank you for the suggestion! I played with VMWare a long time ago (before they supported the NTFS layer in Windows 2000).

What was selling me on Windows 2005 Virtual Server was the supposed support for multiple processors within the client OS in addition to being supported on the host. Since I don't have to buy the layer until after the machine arrives I should demo all the different software packages until I find the one I want.

Fortunately, this is a completely unsupported machine within the corporation so I can admin it as I need to.

Primary purpose is to be able to install multiple client OSs for testing our media product. I know that previous iterations of VMWare allowed you to copy the images out of the directory so you could "blow back" the pristine install in a matter of moments, so that's my plan in regard to the new setup. :)
