Dual SLI vs Tri SLI

From what I understand Tri sli will get you "world class performance" but with diminishing returns. Meaning; with dual SLI you will probably gain more % performance (ie 40%) than you would with tri-SLI (ie 20%).

unless you really really love crysis, I don't think tri-sli is very important...at all, at the resolution.

Personally, I went tri-sli just for the hell of it. Nothing beats having a personal heater during coming winter months :D

4870x2 < 2 x 4870 crossfire =< gtx 260 SLi

probably the closest comparison I can think of

Tri SLI is worth it yes, but only if you havent improved all the other areas of your system, such as a nice fast hard drive, nice cpu and cooler, etc. It still beats the heck out of quad sli as far as gaming is concerned.

What resolution and what cards are you considering?

..this is the key to all SLI - if you have a 25x16 monitor, assuming you don't CPU bottleneck, 3xSLI is probably worth it - as mentioned though, SLI and > gives diminishing returns...IMHO, stick with SLI and wait a little for TNBT from both ATI and Nv...GL;););););)

You'll want a 4Ghz+ i7 or a 4Ghz+ Quad to get all the benefits out of that third card. That being said, you can get perfect scaling out of games like Call of Duty 4. Unfortunantly, you don't really need more graphic power for that game. You'll still see good scaling numbers if you have the CPU to drive it. SLI scaling has come a long way, but you really do need fast CPU clocks to drive it.

I can play anything I want on my 24" monitor 19 X 12 as high as it goes, using SLi'd GTX 285s.

I get better preformance than I got with Crossfired 4870 X2s or a single 4870 X2.

But that's just me.:D

This.

Well it depends on the SLI, and PCI Express slots on the MOBO. Some motherboards have x16, x16, x4. There is no point to that and X16, x16 will be better.

Correct, 3 way with a 16-16-4 would be useless.
Most X58 boards are 16-16-8.

Currently, I cannot imagine a game that needs 3 way SLi. I had 3 way with the 8800 GTX cards, and although it was interesting, I didn't see a great benefit at that time.
