Dual Pumps in serial or parallel?

I originally posted this in the A-C thread, but no one responded so I am reposting out here in the fresh air ;)

All righty guys and gals I'm got all my toys together and I'm ready to start drilling and cutting. I have decided to use two Aquatubes in my setup. The black one (will be here next week) will go in the front in the Aquabay and the silver one is going into the middle compartment case floor above the PSU area of my V2000B. I figure that seeing as how it will be sitting on the floor I wouldn't get to enjoy the water follies on the side mounted one very much except when sitting across the room. So the other one will be for my enjoyment when I am sitting at my desk looking through the glass table I got. :p

My rads are one BI Micro II (dual 80mm) above PSU, one BI Pro 120mm in the front bottom of case just in front of the HDD racks. And of course another 120mm BI Pro in the middle of the case at the exhaust fan port. I figure that should give me great cooling and room to grow as I have been considering using a dual peltier setup with the Twinplex's on my SLI setup. :D

While I'm getting all the rads and Aquatubes in I will think about whether to put this all on one loop or get another Aquastream. I'm interested to hear from others who have ran dual loops or possible running two pumps in the same circuit separated by 1/2 the coolers or even running the two pumps in parallel out of the same reservoir. Tell me all your crazy ideas! :eek:
 
Well I suppose it should be simple, but... There is the issue of my waterblocks that are low flow blocks and Aqua Computer has publicly stated that if you go above a 1048 you will see a decrease in cooling capability.

I guess the real question is whether I can run two pumps in the same serial circuit? IOW, say the following loop:

Res > Pump 1 > Rad 1 > CPU > NB > GPU 1 > GPU 2 > Res 2 > Pump 2 > Rad 2 > HDD 1 > HDD 2 > HDD 3 > Rad 3
 
2 pumps in parallel is more effective. Two pumps in series will act somewhat like 2 fans in series, which is to say, no work very well.

Not strictly true.
Two fans very close together dont work well as the output of the first interfers with the input of the second.
With a big enough gap between them so there is no interferance then you move more air.
Thats why you use intake and exhaust fans.

I would either go two seperate loops or if only one loop then try and rig it so that the flow resistance is the same in both halfs of the loop.

PS. There is no such thing as a low flow block.
All water blocks cool better with more water flow.
Its just that to get more water flowing through the block takes a bigger pump.......
Which adds more heat to the loop........
Which cancels out any cooling gain.

series
pros. reliability, approximatly doubles the head, great for a restrictive loop
cons. no implovement to max freeflow rates

parallel
pros. higher freeflow rate, great for non restrictive systems
cons. if one pump dies the loop will no longer function; because the water will bypass the radiator completely, same head pressure as a single pump

After reading around I would not run pumps in parallel, but instead is series or simply have 2 seperate loops.

note: There is a noticable difference in my pumps between a single pump and 2 pumps in series. there is a higher flow and a significant pressure differential between the line going into the waterblocks and the line going back into the first pump. This is only a squeeze test. No hard numbers, but the inlet to the first pump is soft and squeezeable and the line coming out of the pumps bofore the radiator and blocks is very firm and difficult to compress.

if aqua computer is saying not to use a bigger pump, then what they are most likely indicating is that the blocks and rad don't benifit greaty from increased flow, which would put running the two pumps in series ahead of running them in parallel as far as staying close to aqua computer's reccomendations.

how is it that you drives get hot enough to need watercooling? my raptors and cavier rarely see the hot side of 40C in a normal drive cage.

Well it seemed like just a neat idea ;) And I went for the gusto.... :cool:
 
Due to the restrictions involved in water cooling, two pumps in series will almost always, provide better perrformance than pumps in parallel. Unless you are running a very free flowing system, which you are not. Head pressure is what you need.
