Dual PSU setup fail...

Hey you guys.

I have a tincy-tiny (spelling?) problem. I've built myself a new gamingputer, see spec below. For different reasons I decided to go with dual PSU (I had a Tagan Dualengine 700W and got a good price on a Fractal Design Newton 1000W). I connected the 1kW to the motherboard, 1 gfx and dual hdd, the Tagan is connected to the other two gfx' only. The two PSUs start simultaneously with the green wire to black wire trick.
Anywho...

After a while, no longer than 10 min, the Tagan shuts down, freezing the puter instantly. There is no way the two gfx' draw 700W to make it shut down.
So then why does it shut down?:confused: Any ideas?

I don't see how this is a problem with anything else except the Tagan, anyone second?

Computer specs:
Mobo: Evga 780i
Cpu: QX9650
Ram: 2x 2GB Ocz SLi ready
Gfx: XFX GTX280 x3
Psu1: Fractal Design Newton 1000W
Psu2: Tagan Dualengine 700W (TG700w-U25)
Hdd: 2x 74GB Raptor, RAID 0
OS: Vista Ultimate x64 SP1

Some power supplies can't handle being loaded on just the +12V rails. Power one of the hard drives with the Tagan.

Another issue to consider would be a ground differential between the two PSUs.

You need a multi meter and a about a half hour of time.

Put both PSUs on the bench and load each one with a fan and a hard drive. Short the green wire and any black in the 24 pin harness. Keep the two units physically separate.

Now, set your meter to read DC volts and put one probe in a Molex ground on one unit and put the other probe in a Molex ground from the second unit.

If you see any voltage, either + or – that would be a bad thing.

Put the meter in AC volts and hold one probe on each case. That should read nothing at all.

Dual PSUs can be tough to make work together. Let me know what your readings are ok?

I went another way with my dual PSU setup.

Instead of using the green wire trick with both PSU together I use a 12v relay activated by the first PSU. Once the relay activate the second PSU power up using the green wire+it's own ground.

The only way the 2 PSU are connected together is trough the relay, been running that setup pretty much 24/24 for over 2 years ever since the 8800GTX release. 525w Enermax for motherboard + fans + 4 hard drives and 350W Enermax for 3 hard drives + 8800GTX

Lol, Want and need, two very different states of mind;)
In this setup, it is pointless and is only causing problems however. I can't think of any benefit of having 2. I'm all for overkill, but this just isn't working...

The benefit is always in the eyes and hands of the credit card holder;)

Well, guys.
It seems that Danny Bui (see post #2) was right on the spot. All I did was to connect my hdds to the Tagan and now my puter runs just fine.
Thx Danny Bui! :)

Yeah, there are only a couple of PSU's I can think of offhand that will properly run 12v only (without getting a 12v Meanwell).
