Dual Processor question

I am wanting to build a server with dual procs. I see people talking a lot about how they want a match pair as in same stepping. How important is it that I get the same stepping proc? I mean it would be a kind of hard to get two of the same proc unless I bought them both at the same time which I am not sure I am going to be able to do that.

I posted this in intel proc but it wasn't getting an views
 
Per manufacturers, steppings have to match. From experience, there are only certain instances where steppings have to match. If you buy two processors at once, you'll have no problem at all with steppings matching. Otherwise, I know early version of the opteron weren't compatible with some of the later steppings.
 
Im not sure why you would need to have the same stepping. It could improve the stability of the system, especially if you are OC'ing.

I think you will be okay though. I've run a dually Athlon MP, celeron, and Xeon systems before and have never paid much attention to steppings.

My advice, go to the forum where they were talking about it and PM them as to why it is important.

What do you mean Per manufacture steppings have to match? Stepping to me is just the number on the core. But if there is another one I need to know about before I get the second one I would like to know

Over the lifetime of a product like a processor, there can be slight changes in how they are made etc. Manufacturers recommend matching the stepping so you are guaranteed to have processors that are identical in every aspect.

I second this information.

Processors will have minor changes over time, and those changes can make them incompatible with older processors in a dual-processor setup. That is why they have steppings, so you can tell which ones are newer. If it didn't matter, there would not be steppings.
