Dual power supplies.

I am on a budget, after spending 100.00 on a new power supply to go with the 8800 I just bought.

I would like to add some hard drives to a network storage computer I have in my closet. I just have power and network connected to it, but it's in a tiny case at the moment with a tiny power supply. I was thinking of just rigging it so that I can add my old 350w power supply to it (just leave it sitting on the shelf next to the computer), along with a few more hard drives out of my main system (sick of the noise from them hard drives).

Can someone tell me which wires I need to connect from my old power supply to my new one to make it turn on? I just want to run the hard drives power with the second supply.

Thanks much for the info, and the link especially, it helps having a picture (worth a thousand words and all)

I used to have a dual PSU setup... I am wary of mods so I looked for a product to do it for me...

It was hard to find but coolermaster includes a splitter with one of their cases. I emailed them asking how I could purchase one and they just sent me one for free:)

They called it a PSU splitter 20+4 pins

I wasn't able to find one on their US site but their NL shop has it listed...

It worked great and essentially does the same thing as the mod without cutting or buying multiple adapters to cut and rewire.

That's the same thing as what was linked to (the FrozenCPU Link), so if you are in the USA and want one you can get one from them :)

never thought about having a duel PSU that is cool and as hell and might come in handy in future.

doh I should read the links... For some reason I though it was a modding article showing how to DIY...

When I was looking to get dual PSUs the only think I could find were DIY instructions.

I always thoughts that splitter was a good product and was surprised that I could hardly find one for sale. Glad to see someone is on the ball.

A single PSU is still better though as sometimes voltages and floating ground issues can cause problems for components in your system.

Most people do not need that much power anyways, they just think they do :p

At the time I was running 7 harddrives (1 OS and 6 storage), an older processor and motherboard combo which also drew a lot of power...

I was having boot and stability issues, once I installed the second PSU and ran the storage HDDs off it my problems went away.

I agree, for a standard PC setup 2 PSUs is hardly needed. If you are setting up a RAID server get a controller that supports staggered startup also to avoid the need for dual PSU.

Exactly Right, my Raid Server has a 300w Server Grade PSU in it. That's along with 5 SCSI Drives, 1 IDE OS Drive, and another IDE drive for storage.

I am still amazed by how little power some machines need. My rig in my sig only uses about 200w!

Some do need more power though, I am just saying for the majority, people go over kill with PSUs.
