I have a dual pIII 1 ghz board just chillin in my house. Is it worth it to like, buy two pIIIs and drop them in the mother for $80 for the cretion of a server under win2k OR to spend $87 on an Athlon XP 2100 chip for the socket A board I could procure for free from a friend, which is also just chillin. Both of them have like, a gig of apprpriate ram in them already. I know it may sound like a o-brainer, but like....will teh SMP of the dual pIII help more with the server functions (recalling data, maybe doing some compressing while all that's going on) than the raw speed of the Athlon 2100+

...which one would be quieter?

moderator--should i repost this jammie in the AMD forum as well?

For server, I would go with Dual Pent III. On my server I have 50+ parent/childern running at a time and SMP helps a lot...

Also, I have stock fans on my Pent III and they are quite. I had to check them by hand just to make sure they where pushing air cause I couldn't hear em.

It really depends on what kind of loads you're looking at...

Odds are, for a small home server, either way is going to work just fine.

Unless you're expecting some kinda scary load, I'd go with the cheaper solution.

Doom3 server or not?

The Dual P3 would be better for everything else, but Doom3 requires a 1.5ghz P4 minimum, so it would work better on the AXP.

id choose the dual p3, but the only bad part about that is you would probobly have to deal with pc133 ram :( but it would still be a good server. the celeron 1.3 system in my sig is my current server and its been running great.
