Dual monitors -- worth it?

Well, because of a very enticing 25% off coupon, I just pulled the trigger on purchasing a Dell 2007fp to complement my 3007wfp. If the 2007 is put in portrait mode, the screens supposedly align almost perfectly. As I probably have only a few hours to cancel the order, I just wanted to get a little feedback from the forum.

First off, I got the display because I plan to buy a HDTV tuner and use my 3007 to watch television. Because of my limited attention span, I like to be able to surf the web, e-mail, etc. while watching. With the 2007, I'd be able to watch HD programming full screen on the 3007 while still having a decent free area to do other things. It's also nice for things like Powerpoint where you can run your show full screen on one monitor while having your notes, etc open on the other.

I'm sure performance suffers some by having multiple monitors, but how much should I expect? If I run Oblivion full screen on the 3007, what happens to the ancillary monitor? Does it shut off? If not, does having to display the desktop on the second monitor kill the performance? Also, since the 3007 is an IPS panel and the 2007 is a PVA panel, will the combination of disparate technologies work out well?

Thanks for the help...

having just gotten a second monitor, I must say I don't know how I lived without it. Watching video on one while doing something else on the other is very very nice. From my tests, I didn't notice much of a performance drop after adding my new monitor. When you run a game on one, the second monitor stays as it was. I would say go with it.

once you have dual monitors, you will never want to go back to single ones again..

i have been doing the dual thing for a few years now, and i hate only using 1

well I'll buy it from you if you decide against it :D

where is this 25% off coupon you speak of? are there more?

I got mine from jacuzz1 in the [Hot]|Deals forum. I'm not sure if it was one use or not --there was another thread there called Dell Coupons that had another one. Coupon is good on 2007fp (non widescreen), 1907fp, and 2407wfp. Oh, and you have to buy the item through Dell Small Business.

If you can't find a coupon that works for Dell SB, you can play some Dell back-to-school game and try for a $45 off $400 E&A purchase coupon. Combining that with the 15% off advertised on Dell Home's site gives you a price of only $5 more than the 25% Dell SB coupon. Sadly, the $45 off $400 cannot be stacked with the 25% off coupon...

i got it to apply to an fpw, but dunno if $358 shipped for an 2007fpw is somthing worthwhile

I'll call them tomorrow maybe

Thanks for the responses -- I'm glad to hear others are happy with dual displays (any of you with dual displays that are different sized monitors?).

Should I be worried about the combo of IPS with PVA? The 3007 will be my primary monitor and will be directly in front of me, while the 2007 will be slightly off to the right side. I'd like to use a desktop that stretches across both monitors, so I'm hoping I'll be able to match colors, brightness, etc.
