Been google. Found a thread here not completely answered:
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1495477&highlight=dual+monitors+resolution

But heres my question. I have a 5870. and I plan on getting a 30" monitor running at 2560x1600. Is it possible to have a 2nd 24" monitor running say 1920x1080? I don't want a duplicate of what I am looking at. I want to be able to open separate tabs and windows on the smaller monitor while I game at 2560x1600. Is it possible or not?

I think I would need to extend my video output over the displays. (making one large desktop) gimping my 30" right?

You'll probably need to run the game in windowed mode, but yeah, you should be able to do that. I run 1920x1200 and 1200x1600 and it works fine.

That'll work fine, it'll run at both monitors native resolutions. Depending on the game and whether it's fullscreen or not you may have to alt+tab out of the game to use the browser but it'll work fine. I have 1200*1600 then 2560*1600 then 1200*1600 all hooked up to my 5870s.

Dual monitors at different resolutions work fine. If they are different heights like you mention, you get the option of aligning the bottom or the top.

Extending works like you think it should. You can have a browser open or whatever on one while gaming on the other. However, almost all modern games are full screen. For those types of games, if you alt-tab over to the browser or whatever, it'll minimize the full screen game. Then, you can browse and then alt-tab back. It's not that greatest but it works. If you're thinking about having a guide open while gaming, it will work, just kind of slow to switch back and forth. In my opinion, it works better if you have a laptop or something instead so you can switch more quickly.

Windowed games are pretty much like 2 windows so expected behavior there.

Thanks guys. Sounds like it will work like I want. Running each at there native resolutions. I don't know if all games run window mode or not. I know WOW does. But even as such. You right I when I window WOW i get "behavior"

I may just use the one 30" once I order it. I thought having a 24" would be easier on my eyes for Web viewing. And multi tasking

You will probably just use one when gaming. For other tasks dual monitors are great. Right now I am running a 27 (2560X1440), 24 (1920x1200), and 22 (1680x1050)
