Dual-Link DVI Cards?

So, in looking at the new HP 23" display, it becomes clear that we are going to need dual-link DVI to drive the bigger screens optimally. Problem being, the only cards that seem to support it are the big-ticket FireGL V7100, Quadro FX 4000/3400/(another?), and a few other $2000-range workstation cards. Is there any talk of putting the functionality onto consumer cards, even if it means buying the newest $500 card? I haven't been able to find much more information. It just seems like the support should be there, with LCDs packing more and more pixels by the day. The only positive aspect is that it keeps money in my pocket where it is supposed to be :D
 
Apple claims their own ver. of Ultra 6800 supports dual link. But I didn't know you need a dual link card to run the 23".

I am looking serously in to the 30", which does require dual link. I don't think anyone using this HP 23" owns a dual link card.
 
Oh yeah, I forgot about the apple card. But yes, people are running the 23" on single-link. I think it requires some relaxed timings or something.
 
I am using a using a HP L2335 monitor and a Radeon 9800 pro 128mb. I use the DVI out from the Radeon, no dual link. I did have to use the DVI cable that came with the monitor though because with my older BELKIN DVI cable I was getting some green lines across the screen. Also I am using the "alternate frequency" option in the ATI properties menu.
