Okay, well I bought a Dell 2005 FPW today and I originally thought I would sell my current monitor, but I've been looking at the dual LCD monitor set ups and some of them look really nice. My problem is that my two monitors are different types and sizes. However, I think both are about the same height (one is 1080 pixels and the other is 1024). What is the point of having both monitors set up side by side? Can I have my desktop on one of the screens while playing a game on the other screen? I have a Leadtek 6600 GT that has two monitor outputs. It would be awesome if I could be browsing the internet or chatting on AIM in between rounds of CS and other games.

unfortunatly, you can't chat while cs is running the backround, unless it's minimized. You have to minimze cs in order to regain control of your mouse for desktop use and that would defeat the purpose of having a second monitor. I've tried it before.
If you use two computers, there's a program called Synergy: http://synergy2.sourceforge.net that will allow you to use one keyboard and mouse with two computers and monitors. It will allow you to have IRC and instant messanger and whatever on the one computer while CS:S is running on the first computer. You just have to open the console or ESC in CS to be able to mouse over to the other screen. It works well for me.

You can "extend" your extra monitor onto you main screen. This makes it possible to drag programs (like media players and internet explorer) onto the spare monitor and have them run there while you work on something on the main monitor. This is how I run my projector and my 2001fp simultaneously. I can watch a movie on the projector while I surf the net.
