i have a question about dual ddr... i have dell system with 865G chipset (p4 2.8ghz HT).

right now the system have 2x256MB PC4000 DDR in it and it's working in dual ddr mode. so that's one channel...

i'm thinking about getting 2x512MB PC4000 and put them in other 2 slots (second DDR channel).

if i do this, would i break the chain for dual ddr? if yes, i need 2x256MB instead of 512MB huh? thanks alot for the help. ^^

I'm not sure about breaking the chain, but make sure you put the 2x512s in the first set of DDR slots. Also, I noticed on my new MB that the two slots for Dual DDR aren't necessarily right next to each other; in other words, if they were numbered 1 through 4, my MB manual said to put them in slots 1 and 3.

ok, current system setup have this...

slot 1> 256MB DDR400 >>> first ddr channel
slot 2>
slot 3> 256MB DDR400 >>> first ddr channel
slot 4>

i plan to have this w/o breaking the dual ddr chain, would this work?

slot 1> 256MB DDR400 >>> first ddr channel
slot 2> 512MB DDR400 >>> second ddr channel
slot 3> 256MB DDR400 >>> first ddr channel
slot 4> 512MB DDR400 >>> second ddr channel

or do i need to have it flip-flop like this?

slot 1> 512MB DDR400 >>> first ddr channel
slot 2> 256MB DDR400 >>> second ddr channel
slot 3> 512MB DDR400 >>> first ddr channel
slot 4> 256MB DDR400 >>> second ddr channel

I don't know if it makes any difference or not, but put the 512s in slots 1 and 3 and the 256s in 2 and 4.

I've got a question. You say you have a Dell system? And its a Dell motherboard? Isn't the BIOS locked on Dell systems for overclocking? And if it is why are you buying PC4000? And even if it isn't still why are you buying PC4000 lol?

For Dual Channel to be enabled the DIMMs just need to be the same size and speed in each channel. It doesn't matter if its 2x256MB in channel 1 and 2x512MB in channel 2 or the other way around.

simply as this... BestBuy sells PC3500 Kingston HyperX 512MB for $199 and Kingston HyperX PC4000 512MB for $112 plus $12 rebate.

Well the PC4000 uses Hynix chips so it will have bad timings and will hurt performance especially since your only going to be running it at 200Mhz unless you have a special Dell system that has an unlocked BIOS.

Thats a really good deal on HyperX PC4000 though. Its on back order now though. Maybe their starting to relase PC4000 isn't worth any more then PC3200 lol.

I would buy this Mushkin PC3200 lvl 1 2x512MB dual pack instead for $213.
