Hi! I had always been wondering how much computing power would dual CPU provide compare to one CPU, like compiling speed, rendering speed and gaming performance?

Roughly 2x the rendering and compiling speed ... gaming wont make a difference depending on the CPU ....
 
The extra cores you can get with a dual processor lga2011 system will help in the few applications that are heavily multithreaded like some video transcoding software. However the extra cores will not help in most games or desktop applications (well over 90% will make no use of the extra cores) since these are not designed to use this many threads / cores.

It depends.

If your task is highly paralellisable (examples include compiling multiple independent source files or rendering multiple independent frames) and you have enough ram to back it up then doubling the number of cores with all else being equal should double performance.

However if you want a machine that is twice as powerful as a 3930K box running stock get ready to open your wallet up. For an 8 core 2.4 GHz dual socket capable processor you have to pay $1500 per processor. And then of course you have the cost of the dual socket motherboard, large PSU and large case to consider. Overall you are probablly talking a ~$4.5K box to get double the performance of a ~$1.5K box.

Worse afaict Intel does not allow the current generation of dual socket capable processors to be overclocked. The previous generation could be overclocked but only on an extremely expensive motherboard and who wants to use last gen tech.

I see a 12 core on there, where do you get 13, 14, and/or 15 from?

at the bottom it caught my eye but apparently just rumors.
Interestingly enough, vague rumors of a 15 core chip have not evolved into anything concrete as of yet, at least not to be released at the same time as the others.
 
Opeteron 16 core x2 @1600$ total will annihilate Intel with their HT gimmick. Yup Inown a 3930k not that fast on the HT side.

I'm not sure what this statement means other than you managed to benchmark a company somehow :confused:

As others have mentioned, the performance benefits depend entirely on the workload. A single-threaded workload will show no benefits at all, obviously.

What is your workload? I can't speak to 3D rendering, but compiling tends to scale fairly well with the number of CPU cores.

That said, dual socket systems are prohibitively expensive. If you're compiling, look into solutions like distcc for distributing your compiles across multiple computers on your network.
