Is there a real difference in folding between the two?
say a p3 dual 800mhz vs an amd64 or p4 machine?

I am looking into getting a dual setup, but not sure if
i should commit the time and money to finding the parts (cheaply)

Two duallie motherboards I've looked at in the past; first with 2 1.8 Xeons is $347 and the second with 2 866 PIIIs is $142.50. Obviously you'd need memory (ddr; pc133+ecc), a power supply, and a case for either.

My best suggestion is that for folding boxen, a more expensive 1-way box will probably be better than a cheaper 2-way box: for the same $350 you can get a mobo and a processor which will probably do much better than the Xeons in terms of overclocking and initial speed, for that matter.

However, if the box is doing anything other than folding, get the duallie :D I'm looking at that pIII myself for our file/http/whatever server.

Generally, any high end A64 or P4 will outperform somethng like a dual PIII 800 system. Hell, it's tough to beat my mobile XP at it's overclocked speed.

I would love to have a couple of dually AthlonMP rigs (I mention these since they are probably still a lot cheaper than a dual Opteron system) chewing away on proteins. In the long run, they can save money since they will use less power and take up less space.

At this point, I would think it would be better to go with a higher end A64/P4/AXP system over an older dually if you are looking at pure folding performance. If you wish to mess with a dually, then by all means go for it and install folding on it. That's what I did with the dually PII 266 system I have. It's not doing much of anything at the moment but folding but will probably be a fileserver eventually. The mobo & one CPU were at a friend's house and he didn't even remember he had it and gave it to me when clearing space for my computer. I tossed another PII 266 I had and some RAM into and set it up. It's fun to play with every once in a while and surprising how well it runs WinXP.

I love my P3 dually!!!

I love my duallies also, I find that this is a rather expensive hobby. So when I went toward the quad processor machines, I am still short on cash, so cheap is in on my computers.

Dual Athlon XP Mobiles.
Go fetch.
Unstoppable for folding. Nothing comes close for the price.

Hmm. im not drunk with a credit card. but i hate loosing.

have a bid on a pair of mp 2200
and a bid on a pair of mp 2400...
