I just upgraded my athlon 64 4000 to the x2 4800 cpu. I didn't format I just installed the new cpu and installed the amd dual core driver, dual core optimizer and the microsoft fix. In the device manager it shows 2 cpu's. Is their anything else I need to check to make sure that the cpu is working the correct way? Did most of you format before upgrading the cpu? Windows seems to be running fine with no problems yet.

Im looking to upgrade my 4000+ to a 4400+ maybe a 4800+ (if I can find any this close to xmas)

What is the performance increase like in most games?

Games really run about the same between the 4000 and the 4800. Windows seems alot faster and I can run a bunch of programs now without the cpu maxing out. The only reason I upgraded was to buy a x2 cpu before they were all going. I would like to stick with my socket939 for a few more years. I should be set once some dual core game come out!

i'm about to do this same thing. is there anything else? i'd prefer not to reformat.

Dr Watson kept crashing my system so I did a format today and got everything back working with no problems. I would say to be on the safe side to go ahead and start fresh with a dual cpu upgrade.

oh well. looks like i better start updating my backups.

I went from a single core A64 3200 to the Opteron 170 with no problems - no reformat just put the CPU in and booted straight up.
