Dual CPU + Dual Core?

I was reading some of the threads on dual core vs quad core, my question is whether it's possible / realistic to go for a dual CPU + dual core config, possibly with the option to grab the quads when they drop to normal prices.

The system I would be talking about is for adobe apps (premiere+AE+photoshop at the same time), and some maya outside of that, gaming is not a concern.

Common knowledge would tell me to just get the best I can afford, but i'm trying to stop short of the point where the price jump outweighs the benefit.
 
Yeah, it would work, servers have been doing it for a long time and it's what AMD's 4x4 is (right now), assuming I understand you correctly. It's not too efficient, though.
 
Thanks for the reply, i guess my problem is that i'm sure where the sweet spot is in the following options:

4x4
2 x Dual Core Xeon
Quad Core Xeon
Quad Core Kentsfield
2 x Desktop Core 2 (is this possible?)

What I don't know is:

1) Whether the xeons will actually outperform the desktop chips in those apps, or whether they are just meant for other server tasks (databases,app servers,etc..)
2) If there's a big difference between 2xdual core and 1xquad core performance wise

I figure once I actually know the performance differences I can see if the price differences are worth it.

EDIT: sorry this probably should have been in the multiprocessing forum =(
