so I keep hearing about these but I can't seem to find anywhere that will sell me a dual core athlon or pentium, nor can I find any place that has motherboards for same. Is this a vapor release or am I missing something?

would a dual-cpu dual-core be like 4 CPUs?

so if you got one of those 8-way opteron mobos (there are such things, no?) and they were all dualcore, you'd have a 16CPU beast in one machine.

CPU availability of the Athlon 64 X2 and Pentium D are currently limited to prototypes and engineering samples, if I'm not mistaken. I have yet to hear of a confirmed receipt of either CPU by a consumer at this point.

As for motherboard availability, here's what's up. Every Socket 939 board, to my knowledge, supports the Athlon 64 X2 out of the box or with a BIOS flash. Check with the manufacturer to see which scenario applies. As for the Pentium D, there is limited support by a few Socket 775 boards. You'll have to check with the manufacturer to see if the Pentium D is supported.

Although S939 boards should support dual cores with a BIOS update, we have yet to find one that has worked correctly. Currently, we have a Tyan S4882 rev2 running with 4x Opteron 875 (8 cores total). Everything works fine but the SATA controller...

with, intel, you are going to need a new motherboard entirely, cause their dual core CPUs need a different chipset.
