Dual Core Overclocking?

With the talk of dual cores going around, the question that's been bothering me is: how overclockable will dual cores be? I mean, overclocking one CPU is fairly easy, but over clocking two such as in dual cpu boards is a bit tricker. I mean, would it be possible to run two cores at different speeds? Or?
 
All SMP systems require identical processors in the first place.

So instead of increasing units for 1 CPU, you are increasing them for both.

(Server class will be a different story, but most dual workstation boards apply)

You won't have a choice on individual CPU speed, voltage, etc.

Your only limitation will be finding a dual MB that can also OC well

I have been down that road, and I ended up with twin coppermine 733's with no mobo or bios options to play with. (that was years ago)

Not sure if anyone has a twin board out there that can deliver.

If you find one, let me know. I would have fun playing with it.
 
Im also interested in this, will dual cores mean a large increase in heat? will you have options for each core? etc...
 
Personally I think that wiht dual cores around we won't be OCing anymore, it won't be necessary. And man what about cooling you think that a heatsink will do the job?, I think that maybe watercooling will become maintsrean solution to cooling with dual cores. Then again I could be wrong but thats just my opinion. :)
 
Ambient (case) will increase for sure.

Spacing between procs will also make a difference.

Cooling takes up FAR too much room, even with water.

Dual core both cores on one chip not dual procceors

As for the one that said we wont need to overclock anymore you should be slapped we will ALWAYS need to overclock untill the difference is like using software developed in the late 80's on todays systems, people will never stop reaching for more.

Hyperthreading is the closest to "twins in a socket" that I have heard of.

Other than that... you're buyin a dual board designed for business with no goodies.

Think of it as the mullet of the new millenium.

It gonna depend on what chip you use.

P4's use a shared bus, so two cores in one socket will share the bus almost exactly like two cores in two sockets. The only difference will be in the bus speed; two sockets require slowing down the bus, 2in1 allows full bus speed (with a little higher latency). As for heat, you'll have two complete cores plus a little extra logic, so your heat problems will be double. Overclocking: both core will share the same host clock, so you'll be limited to to the speed of the slower core.

AMD64's use up to three point-to-point busses and an internal crossbar switch. That crossbar was design from the outset to have an extra set of interal connections, ie another set of execution units and cache (not a full core, just the important parts) can be added at will. With the internal switched connect between the cores, things like cache snoops won't impact bus and memory bandwidth like with the P4. Since dual core doesn't require two full cores, heat output won't double. For overclocking, again both core share a clock, but cool-n-quiet will let you lower the multiplier of the slower core so that you can max out the faster.

Anyway, it'll be six months or more 'til we see either. Not much point in getting excited yet.
