i was thinking of getting a dual core intel 820. would this be better than a venice 3200+ rig
heres what i was thinking of getting
amd 64 3200+venice
a nice mobo
1 gig of pc3500 OCZ dual channel ram
and a x850xt
or intel dual core 820
1 gig of ocz dual channel ddr2 ram
x850xt
and a nice mobo
of course i know the price differences
i love gaming but i want a fast, snappy computer. i really dont do any video editing. i want to be able to play games very well especially with battlefield 2 coming out
i also want future proofing hence why im leaning towards intel.
what do you think?
There's no "future proofing". At this time next year AMD and Intel will have switched platforms and sockets.
There are problems with what and how you compare these two prospective rigs. As One guy already tried to tell you, 3200+ Venice is one thing but to bring up a cheap nforce 4 and board compare to a top of the i955X ain't right=P i945 might have been closer to the AMD board, look at the features? These sell for as little as;Asus 945P $132 + PD 820 $273 + 1GB of PQI $127
So for $533, all 3 of these are cheaper than the cheapest X2 and yes, both can be overclocked so stock speed is moot for most folks here, hell, they overclock everything LOL! 3200+ Venice is great for games but there are multimedia apps that show the 820 out doing the 3500+, sheesh! I'm going AMD on my next build and have looked at tons of setups and try to keep my options open.
May as well compare 955 to nForce4 Ultra SLI about a $60 difference.
Something better than a 3200+ Venice to compare to a Pentium D 820.
Please don't compare PC3500 to PC667 when Even PCDDR2 533 has more Bandwidth. Dual Channel PC533 DDR2 has 8.4GB of bandwdith to match Intel's 1066MHz FSB processors. So at a minimum you'd need to compare it to at least DDR1 4200.
I'm kind of shocked none of the AMD guys didn't try to tell you to get better than PC-3500 RAM if you plan on overclock a hammer. 3500 doesn't overclock well.
To get CrossFire to work, from what I saw, you'll need an ATI chipset, I could be wrong though. Then ATI's best bang for the Buck higher end card is the X800XL anyway. XT doesn't make up for the cost difference performance wise. X800XL is about $279 on average. That means that with the extra/leftover money you could get an even faster Processor or etc.... I'd almost bet that a 3700+ and X800XL would be faster than an XT abd 3200+.
I left out the video card because it doesn't changed the price of the rigs as they compare to each other. If all I did was game, I'd buy an Xbox or something.
