Dual Channel or regular DDR

Hey, I'm currently building a moderatley powered system with an AMD 1.6ghz Duron(definately will be overclocked). It's sitting in an ATX EpOX mobo with 2 DDR RAM slots.

It says it runs dual channel memory. I know the difference between plain DDR and dual channel DDR, but I don't know if I can use a dual channel DDR stick by itself, until I have the money to buy another one, or even if I can buy dual channel DDR in single stick increments.

This seems like a simple noobie question to me, but I'm a noobie, so can anyone help me?

dual channel is a motherboard/memory controller standard, not memory. if you have one stick, it will only be single channel, no matter what, where it came from, or what is it labeled as.
two or four sticks will be able to work in dual channel, provided they are all the same, and that the mobo supports it. you can buy two individual sticks of the same thing and have no problem in dual channel

memory labeled as "dual channel" is really just a "kit" of two sticks that are the same thing.

I was told that dual channel memory was different than plain DDR. I guess I shouldn't trust a sales person.

well maybe you are thinking of DDR2, which is a type of ram and is totally different from dual channel...
