Dual Celerons

The old 366's could be modded with slockets to run dual back in the day. However the new celerons will not run dual that I've heard of yet.

Intel only enables SMP on the Xeon. No other CPU's can do it. Even if they could, no one makes a socket 478 or LGA775 dualie board. So your stuck having to go with socket 603/604 Xeons.

The older celerons were able to do smp. The oringals were just socket 370 p3's with crippled cache's. They hadn't yet disabled smp in them yet. That was done until later. It was the big rage with gaming systems, even though no games supported smp. If you do a quick google for abit bp6 and dual celeron it'll show up. The newer gens of celerons since then have all been smp disabled though, so it's xeon, or no dual system with intel processors these days.

Celerons have been SMP-disabled ever since the creation of the Pentium 4 about 5 years ago. If you want an intel dual processor setup then you're pretty much stuck with xeons (if you're intent on buying new hardware).

but, why not just get an AMD X2 and an barebone ASUS motherboard, cheaper and as good,.

A 939 X2 is also a very valid option. They have great performance and good thermals for a very reasonable platform price (CPU + Motherboard combination). Also, as mjz_5 has already pointed out, the 2XX Opterons are a good option and will most likely outperform the related Xeons for less money in most applications.

A lot more than $285 :p.

Probably not too much more than $285 I wouldn't think. The most expensive (and coolest) dual mobo Tyan has is the K8WE (S2895) which is $470-$590ish depending on if it has onboard SCSI or not.

(I wasn't counting procs)

Looking at the K8WE also. Our current server has 2 AMD’s Athlon MP 2600+
on a Gigabyte MB
with 2 x IDE 80GB WD Caviar 80GB 7200RPM EIDE in raid 1 It's holding it's own right now
and actually does a great job there are 7 CODUO servers on it right now but really only 3 of them see alot of use, the others are for matches and practice/scrims. I think the time has come for us to start looking at what we need to replace the current box.

Well, I was only saying that because the auction includes a matched pair of processors and a copy of Windows Server 2k3.

The k8se actually would make a great board for something going into a server room. PCI-E slots for the high end raid cards and a single pci slot for a pci vid card. Not to mention the presence of pci-x also, which is just as good for adding those raid cards in too.

Question about building a server box for gaming and file storage. I have a good idea on PSU's, and HD's configs and type of case. Where I need some info is on the processors
I know xeons are more affordable then Opterons. what about celerons for a server?

MB.

How are you planning to put two CPU's into a MB with only one socket?

Besides, only Xeons are dual capable in the intel x86 world these days.

Thats the MB I was looking at for the AMD chips I see the mistake I made in the first post

what about a pentium D and a 945 board?

talk about a cheap solution.

the CPU maybe $75 less than AMDs cheapest dualcore CPU, but intel's motherboards are up to 75$ more as well...

AMD's perform better also..

Performance question
Athlon MP 2600+ (2.13 GHz) - 128 kB L1, 256 kB L2 - 266 MHz FSB
Opteron 244(1.8GHz)- 64KB+64KB L1,1MB L2 400MHzFSB
Will the Opteron Be a big enough all around performance gain?

Yes. The Opteron would smoke the Athlon MP. However, you may or may not find the performance worth while depending on what the machine is used for and depending on the total system cost. That part is up to you.

Actually, as far as game server performance, if that's what you're using it for, you wouldnt see an appreciable difference at all. Database/web/anything else applications it'd be worth it.

since he's also using it as a file server, i would get an opteron setup. If you purchase an MP motherboard, your gonna also have to purchase a gigabit nic and some sort of sata raid card. By getting the opteron, these things are standard on newer board. Don't forget, the A MP came out years ago.

With the Tyan MB I would have Sata II and SCSI options. I may have to look at the 246 or 248 opterons for now and possiable upgrade to Dual core Opteron in the future
