Dual booting SMP

Anyone try dual booting with the SMP client? I got a friend who's running XP and Vista ( Vista for games and XP because his Vista has stability issues and weird quirks ) and it seems like dual booting is feasible because the same .exe is used for both operating systems. I'm thinking all I have to do is "install" it under both operating systems and the only downside is that stanford will see two userIDs for the same rig?

oh, and yes I did try searching. This doesn't seem to be a topic of interest to people...either that or my search terms sucked.
 
You will see 2 machineID, not userID as long as you used the same folding name and team. I don't see any problem with this so try it.

 
errr, yeah my bad. Machine ID's, not user. Sorry typing this after my 730 class so my brain isn't quite working yet ( why am I still awake? much less doing this of all this? haha ).

While we're on this topic ( SMP client in general ) someone else I know has an issue with their client "locking up" so to speak. I went searching as well and I found this thread..which seemed to be the closest to our problem:

So the client locks up, but it still maxes out the processor. Restarting the client and/or deleting the work unit has fixed it, but just wondering if anyone else has any more information on this.
 
Did you run install.bat ? You need to do this on both XP and Vista.

 
You will see 2 UserID's unless you use regedit to sycronize them.
There are 2 copies in the regisry but only 1 copy of the clint.cfg file.

You can put the client in either in Vista, XP or a spare drive, it does not matter exactly where.
Fire up the first OS.
Make a shortcut pointing to the FAH.exe.
Start Folding so you generate a UserID.
Now run regedit.
Look in HKLM-> SOFTWARE-> (WOW6432node->) PandeGroup-> Folding@home and record the UserID.
Stop folding and reboot to the second OS.
Again make a shortcut pointing at the FAH.exe.
Run regedit again and this time add/edit the UserID so it matches the other OS's.

If its not done that way Stanford will see two UseID's from the one computer and may well loose track of whats being folded on what.
Normally you be ok but if the servers crash then you could well fold for 0 points.

As for the second problem, I'm sure its a permissions problem.
Try rerunning the Install.bat and then rebooting before starting to fold.

Actually that last issue was another guy who's just in XP...so that was just randomness coming from a should-be-working machine.

Yeah I remember the bit about the IDs in the registry but I went looking and couldn't find them. :confused:
edit: whoops, got something.

Is it HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Regedit -> Last key?
or HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PandeGroup\Folding@Home?

Looks more like last key, butttt...yeah.

You only need the WOW6432node if your running a 64 bit Windoze.

This may be off topic, but since you guys are talking about Folding and the registry, I have a question.

On one boxen I had installed the console client (v 5.02 I believe). Later, for some unknown reason that I can't recall, I installed v 5.04. Now in Services there are two entries, 5.02 set disabled, and 5.04 as auto. I'd like to delete the entry for 5.02 from the list of services, and since there doesn't seem to be a way to do that from the Services window, I presume it will require regedit surgery. I know having it set as disabled works, but I'd like to clean it up.

Anyone?

Yes, it require a regedit surgery. Just search for the service name and you will see a branch with a list of services. Just delete the old ones.
