Will I be able to run dual ATI cards with this motherboard?
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
If not then what video card or motherboard changes would you recommend?

They will probably work but as seperate cards. ATI's answer to SLI isn't released yet AFAIK and requires an ATI based motherboard to work.
 
Hopefully someone will be able to confirm this because I'm unsure. However, my understanding is, is that you need an ATi chipset motherboard (like Xpress200?)to use crossfire (as well as a 'master card' for the 'X' series range)
 
Got ya. Well looks like the rig I just spec'd out needs to be started over again. Unless I can just take the 5-600 dollars or so I was gonna spend on dual cards and get one really nice card. Will I be happy with framerates for Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 with a single card solution compared to a theoretical dual-card?

Well you could always wait for the r520. Are you agp right now? Because if you are the 7800GTX seems like it's out the window :(
 
I am building a whole new system from scratch. So no AGP. Looks like I am back in the NVIDIA camp though. I have been happy with my radeon on my old rig but I really wanna see what this dual gpu is all about. Time to ask some questions in that forum.
 
Little is still known about Crossfire, but if ATI has any chance of it catching on it more or less will have to work with any PCI-E SLI MB.
And the NF4 chip set.
I'll tell you right now, you are no going to see anyone trading in a NF4 for a Xpress 200 MB.

I hope ATI comes back and just makes SLI look like yestersday forgoten toilet flush, but I doubt it so very much.
 
Well the preview of croosfire on anandtech's website was very impressive for a beta product. And why would nvidia allow ati to put their sli competition on their chipsets?
 
how do you know it's up to nvidia? Maybe all ATI has to do is program their cards right or get the right bridge.

It depends on how NV sees it. If they think it would take away sales of their video cards (doubt it), they wouldn't like it. If they see it as a boost to their nf4 sales, then obviously they'll give ATI the go ahead.

And as I see it, 7800GTX SLI is the only one worth a damn right now. 6600GT SLI = 6800GT, 6800NU SLI = 6800GT or U, 6800GT or U SLI = 7800GTX. 7800GTX SLI = uber.

And the single card is always cheaper. So SLI isn't worth it very often.

Those two games are easily handled by the top couple tiers of cards, without resorting to a dual card solution.
