Dual 4850X2 Question

I have a Sapphire 4850X2 powering 4 monitors, if I turn on Crossfire, 2 monitors turn off. If I got a second 4850X2 and turned on Crossfire, can I still drive all four monitors, or is limited to 2 monitors even with 2 cards?

when crossfire is enabled, only monitors connected to the first card will work, even with a 2nd card
 
Yeah you will be limited to two monitors in crossfire regardless of the number of GPUs.

What you can do however is get a 2nd card, something cheap but ideally still part of the same generation to avoid driver issues. Something like a 4350:

Then you would be able to run your 4850x2 with its crossfire enabled and have the 4350 handling the 3rd and 4th monitor all on it's own.

I had a similar setup going for a while where I used an X300 PCI alongside both of my 4870x2 cards to power 4 monitors, but because the X300 uses the legacy driver it became a bit of a hassle on top of an already delicate driver situation.
 
I was hoping to just have the extra horsepower across all the LCD's, if I can't do that I'm not that concerned about enabling it on only two.

If you want to do more than 2 monitors, you need to get 5xxx or 6xxx series cards, and a displayport adapter. :)

Yes, but that only comes with "6 x Mini DisplayPort". Make sure your monitors are DP, or be prepared to shell out for adapters.

I think I might be ok with that, Monoprice has the Mini Displayport to DVI or HDMI for about $10 each. Which isn't much once you figure in two of those 6x cards, a 27" LCD flanked by four 20" LCD's
