Dual 3.0GHZ 64-bit Xeons, 2.4TB SATA HD RAID, Dual PCIe, LARGE PICS 56k B Warned

Trust me on this...no porn will ever grace this machine. Not even by accident. I know a couple of you had asked about why no Opteron...well since PCIe Dual Opteron boards are on the horizon from both Tyan and Iwill I may be called upon to build another one...or three :D

Cool.. but doesn't SATA suck for reliablity? Why not SCSI?

I would say the same thing....SCSI > SATA...but I guess it really depends on what the server will be used for....

speaking of which....what will it be used for? hosting counter strike servers I hope! :D :p

The main reason for SATA over SCSI was the cost per megabyte. SCSI is just rediculous if you want any kind of real capacity...

This is currently being used for development, but once that is complete it should be moved into a classroom somewhere that requires a secret clearance to enter.

hehe, that's awesome.
I would love to take something like that to a LAN party and have people whine about the ugly pc.

Then take off the cover and show them that the thing can actually bend space/time.

Fantastic post! Thanx for sharing this with us. I've actually been looking for a solution not quite too far from that one so thanks for the hardware suggestions. I've had a Supermicro board and chassis before; nothing better for the money I'd say.

And 2.5TB isn't actually THAT much these days depending on what you're using the data for. I've had to build file servers that come fairly close for 3D animation duties or a HDD-based backup fileserver for a corporation's data -and they filled it up in no time!

GREAT POST!!!

hahaha

"how can you frag me if...it's yesterday!!" :p

No one understands how jealous I am....only how jealous they themselves are....anyways, as I sit and sigh, hysterically hyperventilate, cry, drool, and a lot of other stuff that only an incredibly jealous person could...I leave. That's crazy stuff, though, man. Your hands must have been honored to be placed upon such incredible machinery...

That has got to be the funniest $hit I have read in awhile... :p

Those pictures got more reaction than a nudie pic would have! [H]ere! :D
Hell I know what I will be thinking about in my sleep......terabytes....sata....cpu......uhh..gota go! Nice Rig.

Wow. The 1st picture was enough to give me a heart-attack. Sorry if I missed it, but what are you going to use this server for? What's the estimated cost for this beast?

the use...government stuffs...

price tag...well at the time...over 10k...RAM has dropped here recently so it probably would be a bit cheaper..

Nice job on the Maxtor HDD's, finally someone else who uses them besides me...
Everyone seems to love Western Digital..

I just saw those pictures and had to focus on not spontaniously combusting at the sight of that monster. If only that case weren't 1K on its own with a power supply... Thank you for those glorious pictures :)

Yeah, well they needed capacity and speed, and they wanted to do something more cost effective than SCSI. WD may have release the Raptor drives, but when it comes to SATA they really can't do much right...apparently the SATA II drives they are releasing are minus NCQ.

I was especially satisfied when you mentioned that linux going under the hood. What flavor of Linux. What version kernel did you use? Any hardware compatibility problems?

Oh come on you can't have all that and not fill it up with all 16 Gigs of RAM.

:p

Anyway

WOW

I know they are putting RH 7.2 and an old ass kernel...I have said this a million times, the government finds something they like, and they stick with it

I FEEL for the developers...lots of new tech in this box, lots of tech not supported in that distro...but hey no one said their job was fun ;)

I wonder if a tyan opteron board would fit in that case (as supermicro seem to be an intel only outift at the moment)

Been there, done that...no problems...in fact I am hitting the AMD tech tour here pretty soon and was looking for a case to put the dual opterons in, and I may grab another one of these chassis. Can't decide, but if I don't like it as a pedestal, I'll just rack it.

nice build..

but like jmrobert70 already said, 2.4TB is not much space at all.. when you work in an enterprise environment terrabytes of information flow like water.

one thing though, if that server was mine I'd max out on that ram :)

and having 3 redundant power supplies is just drool... that case is awesome, black is even nicer

Well of course there are better looking cases out there, but when was the last time you saw a rackmount that wasn't utilitarian in design. :D These things aren't supposed to look cool. They are supposed to have a specific feature set and thats it. If you were to go look at the cheapest rackmount case that newegg sells. And then compare that to one that was, say $100 more expensive, there would be some added features, but the case wouldn't have any better of an asthetic design (well not much, I guess black would have been an improvement :p ). Then you look at this case which is several hundred more and the incredible feature set it includes...and then you realize...damn...it is one bad ass case.
Completely true, these are professional, industry-use tools. Most people in this class wont care how it looks, just how it fares.
