Dropping a CPU?

I was building a clients computer when I dropped an E6300 from about 30cm off the table. I thought I secured the processor in the motherboard but I soon found out that I didn't when it feel out of it's socket.

There was no visible damage, but I'm wondering, how strong are processors. I've heard reports of some people dropping them onto hard tiles without them breaking? If there is a strong chance the CPU is faulty, I'll just return it and say it was faulty on arrival (intel are rich). It's just that the new system isn't displaying anything on the monitor when turned on, and so It could well be the processor.

My other question is this. Will an intel 3.4Ghz 550 processor work in a conroe motherboard. I'm guessing it will as the chipsets should be backward compatible? I would just like to test the system with my processor to check.

Cheers!

if it has the same socket it will work. the only reason that there was a problem with conroe working on the 975 chipset is that it had different power requirements than the other s775 cpus. also, its probably not a good idea to type about defrauding a manufacturer here, possibly even against the rules.

Yeah, dropping in your other processor should work.

BTW, I really don't care if you lie to intel to get a new chip, but them being rich is an awful justification to do so.

When your going to do something like this, don't tell others what your plan is. =P

^^^ exactly

but cpu dont have any moving parts, the most likely damage would of been the green plastic breaking.

and the good thing with 775, no worries of bent pins.

It's not like you wouldn't RMA a part if you broke it :). However I actually don;t think it is broken. I'll give my processor a test in the rig and see if it is the processer.

Thanks for your help.

completely not the point. nobody typed that; only that it wasnt a good idea to publicize your plans.
