When i was 1st opening the plastic package that the hsf and cpu come in. i didnt see how the cpu was held in place. when the box popped open. the chip fell out of that little plastic tub its in and landed on the floor. now that iv started lapping the cpu iv jus seen what damage was actually caused

on one corner where it hit the floor, its squished up a little bit. Its still a couple of mil from the corner pin. but it is a lil noticable. havent had chance to boot sys yet as iv been dismantling all old gear... what are my chances??

If it's just the case that you bent then the processor may work, but the heatsink might not make perfect contact with the top surface...as long as the holes line up with the motherboard (they don't have pins right?) then the processor will run, assuming no massive internal damage was done.
 
gonna give it a go tonight. im out at the moment. Take into account i gotta dismantle my water cooling loop to get the stuff back in before i can check if it posts. will post back on here on my laptop with results, gonna take ages to get windows and everythin on. or will it? Will windows install quicker on a c2d? If it works. will i benefit from a mild OC in bios before installing?

It is best to always install Windows with all hardware at factory speeds.
 
installation depends more on the DVD/HD speed rather that cpu speed... IMHO, installing it on p3 or c2d with the same hardware (well, hypothetically) will take about the same time. So no, no benefit from overclock for installing windows :D The best way to speed up the install (besides having good HDs) is to make an unattended installation disk. It takes time to make one but once you done, installation itself is a breeze, you don't have to do anything (but you can vary that)
 
It's probably fine.

Try it out and if it doesn't work - see if your retailer will let you return it.

While I agree that it's disappointing to damage new hardware, it's unreasonable to ask/expect the vendor to pick up the bill for your own lack of care. If you total a car three days off the lot, is it fair to demand a refund?

That said, it's probably fine. The core itself is what matters, and that's quite resilient- at the end of my Opteron's life, I ran over it with my car (on purpose). Mind you, it was already dead and naked, but there was no visible damage to the core- not so much as a chipped corner.
 
biggest worry is corner pin not making proper contact and somethin happening. Dont have a camera with macro facility so no go sorry
 
I don't get why you would even start lapping it before you tested to see if it was damage from the drop. Now if it doesn't work you have two variables that could have potentially caused it, and now you definitely can't return it if it doesn't work. *shrugs*

But hopefully it just works. It's all solid state in there, should be okay. I almost dropped mine once, but it was over carpet.
 
Just booted it all up. Made a mad dash to get water cooling unpacked from old sys and into this one. Think its all gone well. Managed to sort out a few bugs in the loop too. Upon taking out the loop the gfx block started to leak :O sorted that out. Aint hooked it up to a monitor or anythin. Had nothin happen (no post beep or anythin) (isnt there an onboard speaker like the DFI LPs?) Anyway, after 30 seconds or so it started to access hard drive to try to load old windows. So i pretty sure it all works fine. Jus gotta reboot windows and stuff. Woohoo!

No, not really, especially when I didn't mean to imply that he should return it and *dupe* them into taking it back. If he simply inquires about their return policy, there's nothing wrong with that. Maybe they're able to return mildly damaged parts.

Anyways, don't get so bent out of shape over nothing. :p
 
windows is almost installed now so it looks like it works fine :D

In bios everythin stock. hardware monitor said cpu was at 27c under my apogee. For stock volts and speed how does that fair up?

damned pc is in bed room with 7 month old daughter n she tryin to sleep. So it looks like my work for tonight has been stumped :( grr
