I am pretty :( now

I recently fried a K7S5A mobo+1600XP+512 PC2100 ram, so I upgraded to a NF7-S mobo with a 2500 barton, and Pc2700 ram...kept the same other parts, including my crappy video card it's a GF2 GTS...

anyways I reloaded windows XP after I put all the stuff in, downloaded lastest Nvidia drivers, did all the security patches from windowsupdate and what not, and in some games I noticed a drop in FPS...so I tested it tonight with 3dmark2001, comparing it to previous results (dont laugh, I know it's old school but my card can't handle much more  , lol) anyways my score has a 1000 # cout, it's at 3500 whereas it was around 4500 before buying this stuff...I am scratching my head as to why this is...

I am hoping there is nothing I overlooked, as far as I know there isin't but I am looking for anything to try, I dont expect an increase in #'s from my old system to this one since the bottleneck is clearly the video card, and has been...but I am looking for a reason why the drop is so great...this really  me off

oh ya the PC2700 ram I got in there now is in dual channel, 2*256, and only waiting for the store to get some 3200, so I can oc to 11*200

Did you turn off the God-awful xp fps lock? Did you use the nvidia nasty file remover to remove the gf 2 driver after you installed new agp motehrboard drivers and then reinstall the gf 2? did you strip your windows xp processes down? Did you scan for virii, trojans and the such? Did you check the seating of the agp card (lol, bot me a few times.)? Are you using the same resolutions you used before in games and 3dmark because 3dmark score is resolution dependant?

Thanks for the reply Adam,

I did not turn off the XP FPS lock, was not aware there was one, if someone could point me how to disable that, it'd be great

I didn't use any software to remove old drivers, I just overwrote them, actually it was the first download I did when I got the machine up and running, got the latest detonator pack from the site.

In terms of stripping down services and what not, I dont want to touch that mainly because I didnt touch that before, and even with the tests running they appear to not require much power in terms of processing.

yes scanned for viruses, trojans, all that evil crap ..

the seating of the video card, I wont touch, this board has a little locker thing and I'm using that

same resolution as before...I will try to get a side by side comparison chart and post it in the tread

one thing I did notice right before I posted is that the test prior to upgrade was done on 3dmark 2k1 SE, whereas the one I did was just done in 3Dmark 2001 non-SE...not sure if anyone would know if that would make a difference or not, I did download the SE but it wont run...says I dont have DX8.1 drivers...I am running 9.0b, I find that strange, but what can you do :)

Thanks again

I just ran PCMark 2004, and it told me my AGP is set to 1X... the other tests did not specify, so I rebooted, set it to 4X in the bios (took it off auto) and what'cha'know it's back to 1X again when windows opens up...

anyone know why this is? anyway I can force it to be 4X?

Try Rivatuner. Hit the little triangle pointing SE and the first button that pops up (low-level system settings). Then go to the AGP tab and see if it'll let you select 4X.

Also make sure SBA and possibly FW are enabled.

update (once again) :

I am pissed off, but I did get it to 4X, forced in in powerstrip, also forced fast write...if this fails I will try the software suggest by PliotronX (Thanks), and see if that works

I am just pissed off, why would this stupid thing happen? fucking windows, I sware I need Tux in my life...just me and the penguin

Thanks for your help everyone

Im not familiar with your old mobo, but did you go from a via chipset to nvidia? I noticed the same thing when i went from a kt266a to nf2. Games with shiney surfaces had horrendous fps drop on the nf2 chipset while the kt266a had no problem with it. I did not have the agp and fw problem though.

could someone please explain to us how to disable the win xp fps lock ... i never heard of this before and now i'm really interested... does this apply to ati hardware too?

Maybe by the FPS lock he means to disable VSync? Not too sure..never heard of that myself :|

fixed it!

to those who may run into this problem, I DID install the chipset drivers from nvidia.com and that was the fix, the boyz @ futuremark.com helped me out :D

I did hit 5033 with my crappy GF2 GTS :)

--edit: had did NOT install drivers....boy I was tired---
