I've been using a DroboPro as a backup device for my media server and VMs but I'm sick of the slow transfer and long backup times resulting from it (Veeam takes forever to backup the VMs at 20-40 MB/s).
Do I really need the extra speed? No. Would it be nice... yes
Not only that, but I would really like a replacement that can function as a temporary backup to my OpenIndiana storage server if needed.
The current server is running an Intel X3430 on a Supermicro X8SIL-F with 16GB RAM.
Pool 1 consists of 8 2TB drives in RAIDZ2 - used for media storage (SMB) and large virtual disks like WHS backups (NFS) - only about 7 TB actually used
Pool 2 consists of 4 750GB Seagate ES drives in a striped-mirror - used for Virtual disks (NFS) - only using about 500 GB
Pool 3 consists of 4 1TB drives in a striped-mirror - used for TV recording via a SageTV VM (iSCSI) - only using about 500 GB
My plan is to sell the DroboPro and use the funds to help build a new system. I'm also looking to pick up some SSDs to replace the 750GB hard drives for better VM performance. Since it will be a "backup", performance isn't nearly as important. My current thoughts are to buy 4 3TB drives and run them as a RAIDZ to backup my media/file storage. I can re-use the 750GB drives once I replace them with SSDs. As for TV recording.. I'm not really worried about backing that up.
What I'm not sure on is motherboard/processor choices. For the last several years I've stuck to Supermicro for my server builds, but for a backup system I'm not sure I can justify that. Of course, if I could find a cheap X8SIL-F and processor... I've already got 8 GB RAM I could use on it
Otherwise, any recommendations on a stable, low power, cheap
combination? I know the 1156 socket is a little "long in the tooth" but I've currently got one ESXi host and my storage using it and have been very happy with it.
