Driving Simulation

Hi. About some 4 years ago I bough a generic racing wheel at radio shack. It was okay, and i used to to play midnight club 2 on pc.

Not so long ago I started driving a real car. While it has been a long time since I didn't play racing games with the steering, i noticed driving a real car is quite different then a virtual one.

I was looking to buy a new racing wheel (since my radio shack one has been broken for several years now)... The MOMO seems oka. And im also looking for a good Driving simulation game, like when you go uphill, you have to push the pedal a bit deeper etc...
And, I got 3 screens on my PC (19" 22" 19") is there any driving game that could take good use of those?
Im looking for a simulator to race on tracks and in city too would be cool.

I also got Z-5500's so a good simulator with good audio would be cool too :)

City wise, I haven't played a game better than Midtown Madness 1 or 2 for that purpose. Pretty realistic driving but terrible graphics for today. I mean the game was full speed on my Geforce 4MX!

I really wish Microsoft would make a 4th for PC. (I didn't like the 3rd for Xbox 1)

Dont forget about the new standalone expansion pack to Race 07, GTR Evolution.

iracing for sure, I love it. race 07 + expansion is very good, rfactor is another good sim.. but if I were starting out today I would go straight to iracing I think.

G25 is a great wheel for the dollar, especially if you are going to do sims, much better choice than momo. If you plan to do arcade stuff mainly momo is a good option.

iRacing @ 20$/month? or 150$/yr.... I can't afford a cellphone how will i afford this!!
G25 a bit too $$ im looking for something in the 100$ range

I just got GTR Evolution earlier this week, and the faster GT cars don't feel as good as in the other Simbin games. I've been playing GTR2 for a while (started out with GTR when that came out) and got Race 07 as a complement for the different tracks, WTCC cars, and open-wheel racing.

You are not going to get serious "real world" driving practice by playing a game. Don't think that one will translate to the other. I promise. Especially don't think that just because you can master a video game means you can go out and do those moves on the street. Please!

I have spent years behind the wheel of regular cars and trucks, plus I have spent many years racing competitively. No video game can help you practice. The Gran Turismo games were great, but they still lack the adrenaline pumping through your veins and the gutteral reaction of actually getting bumped in a real car. Your instincts take over and either you're prepared, or your not. And a video game can't simulate that environment at all. Sure, the game can teach you theory about breaking points and turn-in points and about hitting apexes, but you can't translate that into the real world. It doesn't work.

Please don't try it. I don't want to see you get hurt just because you own on a video game and think its just as easy on the streets. The problem I faced was racing my street car on the track.... then wanting to translate some of that onto the street since I was in the same car with the same smells and same sights. Its a dangerous game, and I eventually went to a dedicated track machine and left my street machine on the street. Inside a real car is very different than inside yoru living room.

amen to that. The point is even more proven when playing FPS games :D you respawn in there!

But yeah, racing sims are ok. They somehow are a good reflection but with a lot of points missing. Though i did a lot of practice for my driving lessons in there as well. xD its not the real thing, but it gave me a good idea lol

When moving from the street to the track, a racing sim is a great stepping stone.

Face it, most think that passing on a curve is just turning under someone at the apex by twisting the wheel more, and passing on a straightaway is just a matter of pressing on the gas pedal harder.

A sim can fix that.

Did any driving (not just racing) simulator appear during those 2 years (for PC)? Something where you could just drive in usual traffic? :)

No offense meant but that sounds like the single most boring, most unmarketable game ever.

Agreed. Realism can be a good thing... but if a game made me sit in a traffic jam for 3 hours, I might have to shoot something. Even simulations have aspects that make them exciting or challenging usually. In racing sims, you are... well, racing. In Flight sims, you are flying (which isn't something most people do on a daily basis). A sim that just made you drive to the grocery store or commute to work in the morning... that's something most people do every single day. What exactly would be the point?

All that aside, this is the closest thing I know oft:

God help whoever would find that "game" fun though. I guess if you were training for a job at CTA you might find it interesting. Other than that, I can't think of a reason.

Although not a simulation game GRID is really fun. Especially racing the sprint cars.

Get the MOMO then, and Rfactor is what our group currently uses, for endurance series (mix of ALMS and European series cars, and prototypes.), Rfactor 2 should be out soon, and that has some awesome looking shots of wet weather effects, fully dynamic weather and time of day (won't see that in Gran Turismo).
