I just bought the codemaster pack for 17$ on steam and i wonder what kind of controller you guys use for driving game.

Would love a steering wheel , last one i had was a microsoft sidewinder when i use to play nfs porsche. I dont have that much money , and a controller could do the job as well. The wired 360 one is interesting also.

any tips or deal i should watch for?
 
I bought a logitech wired controller from Fred Meyer for $20.00, I'm much happier with it than the keyboard (which is utter fail in driving games)

I forgot to tell i have the same controller. But find it ... well... just ok.
 
I use the 360 controller, which works with every single driving game I own. Wheels are too fussy.
 
I have an old xbox-s controller... could it work with the right adapter?

No. But the 360 controller would be a nice investment. Even for non driving games. Just Cause 2 for example - I just can't see myself playing that using the keyboard?
 
The 360 controller is nice because it tends to have pretty good compatibility with games. Some games even have a "Xbox360 controller mode" where it automatically changes a lot of the heads up icons to the 360 buttons. I'm using a wireless one with a wireless receiver. At the time, the receiver cost like $15 for me. I think it's no longer available as standalone and you have to buy it with a controller as a pack. In that respect, I think a wired controller may be a better investment.
 
I did a bit of research today on XBox 360 controllers. I bought the standard white wired one on amazon for $25. The wired white Windows version is $10 more and is exactly the same as the standard except that the Windows one includes the drivers on a CD, and the standard one will download the drivers through Windows Update, so save yourself $10. If you like wireless controllers, the official wireless black version is also the same except that it may have a slightly better feel on the grips.

Of the third-party models, the "Xbox 360 Pad EX 2 with Turbo - Black" has an improved D-pad which is important for fighting games and extra buttons. However, the original 360 controllers have better analog sticks for driving, which is what this thread is about.
 
I use the wireless xbox360 controller for windows. Works extremely well.

When I first got GRiD, I tried using an older low end logitech force feedback wheel. The force feedback didn't work too well, so the wheel was very floaty. I also tried out an older logitech dual analog gamepad, but it didn't work too well either. I junked both of them, replaced them both with the xbox360 gamepad.
 
I use a wired 360 controller and it's been great. For both racing and non racing games. Many games are designed with the 360 controller in mind now. I just grabbed Grid over the weekend and it plays very nicely with the analog sticks.
 
yup, 360 controller all the way :)

I prefer using the wireless version, but mine is in storage at the moment, so I've been using a wired version. Both work well
 
Logitech G25, works fine.
You might be able to get a G25 cheap now, since there is a newer model G27 that replaced it.
 
If its a more sim oriented game.... logitech momo or logitech g25...

otherwise any old controller outta work. I always preferred a ps2 style knock off personally.
 
The G25 is really nice. The G27 has more buttons on the wheel, but other than that . . .

Both work on the PS2 and PS3 also.
 
PS2 controller with adapter and XPADDER for me :)
 
You can put a male usb connector on your xbox controller s and it'll work pretty well in windows with the xbcd drivers. I have one that I use with grid. It's as simple as cutting off the existing end and matching wire colors.
 
I bought a Logitech Driving Force GT off amazon for around 65 bucks. Its great for GRID, DIRT, DIRT2, NFS SHIFT, and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

fun times, was thinkin of playin dirt 2 again.
 
Amazon has the 360 wired on sale right now. Picked one up to play some dirt 2!

There is a guide on how to make it work like a standard usb controller, the wires are in place, just the adapter is needed (Windows will even detect the gamepad). The 360 pad is still the best pad for the pc though.
 
i dont want to hack my xbox-s controller... still have my old xbox set-up in my basement. I found a wired xbox 360 for 35$ at ebgames. Used but in great condition. should i bite?

What are the odds that it's been permanently locked out? You can buy an XBox 360 controller on amazon for $25.
 
It's been said a lot already, but the 360 controller is definitely the way to go. I personally use the wireless one. I use it for GTA4, Just Cause 2, Dirt 2, etc. It's awesome that in a lot of games you just turn it on and it's supported.

I just went to futureshop to scope what was available. Just to saw the god damn old same logitech controller i use right now. And for 30$.
 
Another vote for the wired 360 controller. Perfect controller IMO, other than a so-so D-pad.
 
I have a wireless 360 controller on my HTPC and that works pretty well. But to be honest the best controllers I've ever used are full sized joysticks. I find it to be much more precise steering a vehicle. Perhpas in I'm the minority here though.
 
I use the G25. Backup is a windows 360 controller I picked up over a year and a half ago at Fry's B&M when they were on sale for $19.

If you chop off the connector, it lines up color for color with a usb cable, so in a roundabout way, yes it could work with teh right adapter.
