New format, installed windows update and then went to install the Catalyst drivers. Installed fine, reboot and they don't take effect, still 16 bit color.

Check for problems in ctrl panel... sure enough there's an error on the primary driver:
Your computer's system firmware does not include enough information to properly configure and use this device. To use this device, contact your computer manufactuter to obtain a firmware or BIOS update. (Code 35)

ok....

Flash the Bios, nothing. Try the non-softmoded drivers, nothing. Tried Omega drivers, no joy.

There isn't any new firmware for the 9500 as far as I can tell, so I really don't know what's causing the issue. Any one have a clue?

edit
tried reformatting and installing vid drivers first, no go.

Is it BBA? I remember some of the older cards that weren't BBA needed a different set of drivers, not sure if it applies to the 9500 series though. Good luck.

No, Saphire

Figured I'd post in case anyone comes across something similar.

In the end it looks like my Audigy2 was causing conflicts with everything. I tried to install my PCI ATA card and was getting BSODs. Pulled the Audigy 2 and now everything works.
