Driver for Intel ICH crashes constantly.

I get constant crashes, anywhere from 5min to 30 minutes after boot. Not all, but some of the blue screens have blamed atapi.sys.

I searched relentlessly for drivers. Chipset INF installer works, but still, not all of the devices in Device Manager -> System Devices are all Intel drivers. Some are still Microsoft sourced.

But I think I found theculprit in the IDE channel driver. The Intel installer for 845 series chipsets, which my laptop is, refuses to work. Refuses to find a compatible device, WTF! Intel's chipset ID utility identifies my southbridge as 82801CAM (ICH3-M).

But their driver doesn't install. The Windows auto detect driver is for an Intel 82801CAM, but it crashes. Right now, I uninstalled that driver, and using some other generic built-into window shit named "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller".

I have run 2 days without crashes. I may just leave it like this, but I do wonder about any performance or such I am missing. And also frustrated why Intel drivers will not work.

I could install them manually, force the issue. But inside their .exe packages are a bunch of .cat files that I cannot figure out how to open.

Thinkpad R32 is the offending system in question hate thinkpads. Bloatware and incompatible hardware nightmares. Out of all the Dell's and HPs, and compaqs when I was in school, only the Thinkpads in class had parallel ports incompatible with our PIC emulation boards. Nothing but headaches out of these stupid systems. /rant
