Driver clean between ATI and ATI?

selling a 4850x2 and getting 2x 6870. Do i need to clean drivers or just install the cards? Do i need to install 1 at a time or just put both in and boot up? I have the latest drivers too.

When I switched from my 4890 to 5870, I didn't un-install drivers. I just put the card in(you should put both in at once) and booted up and let Windows do it's thing. There was no problem.

I ended up having to remove drivers going from my 4870 to a 6850. It cant hurt, I also use driver sweeper, you can get that over at Guru3d. I always say, better safe then sorry.

if you have the latest driver just throw the card(s) in, if not update than proceed. Should be easily. I've never had a hard time swapping ATi cards in and out.

Thats what I tried to do and my system was having none of it. I even got the latest drivers and installed them before the card came. So I ended up doing them the way I always do.

more or less unrelated, but going from a x800 to an hd3450 I had to redo drivers. windows was like wtf? when I put the new card in.

Doubt its necessary, personally I do it on my wifes computer whenever a new cat series is available. Going from cat 9 to cat 10 I did a sweep. Perhaps when cat 11 comes out I'll do it again.

well in ati overdrive its saying my first card is 0% activity and my 2nd card says 99% activity. I cant enable manual fan control on either of them.. And when i go to play a game gpuz says my clocks are only 100/300

Performance is about the same in 3dmark 06 which is weird but now i can crank dead rising 2, fallout vegas, metro 2033.

Im a bit confused here

ATI overdrive has my first card clocked at 700/1150 and my 2nd card as 625/993

When I just tried to do mine without a full sweep I didn't get the AA option in the CCC. So I did a remove sweep and install.

I remove the drivers in the program and features panel. Reboot in safe mode open Driver Sweeper and just check the Ati box and hit clean. Then boot up install drivers and reboot. Might be different options for Driver Cleaner.

ati's updater is pretty through with it's uninstaller (at least much better than nvidia's when it comes to switching between ati <> nvidia). I've found it does leave some junk in the registry, but nothing that seems to have any effect on system stability as far as I've experienced.

so I'd say there's no real need to do a sweep after uninstalling before updating an ati driver or swapping to nvidia, but it doesn't hurt as well.

The x800 uses the legacy, pre 'HD' drivers IIRC.

I personally DriverSweep every time, doesn't take that long and I don't really see a reason not to.

Nothing removes the dll files better then a cleaner in safe mode.

something is making the 2nd card run at 100% and i dont know what it is. Its at 0% right now and randomly goes to 99% but fan speed stays at 20% and does not heat up. It really makes no sense at all.

Im using the 2 pci-e power from the power supply. Should i just use 1 of them and plug in another for the other card? I dont see it making a differene since i had both plugged into my 4850x2 before. Im just trying to narrow it down

I haven't uninstalled old drivers since the 4800 series. I think at this point it's effect is a myth and problems stem from other areas.

I always do a sweep between cat versions, as thier auto install thing does not seem to clean old stuff out it just piles more stuff on, to take couple of minutes to clean is better then getting weird errors, performance hits, and general crude, I HAD to when I switched from my 4870 to new 6870, windows auto installed a bunch of stuff, such as generic drivers, drivers for my monitor(which were not even the right ones) etc.

This caused some big performance and visual quality problems, so i swept drivers, booted into safe mode, swept there again, rebooted and installed newest cat drivers and proper drivers for my monitor and no issues now, runs amazingly well. Tell you the 4870 to 6870 is on heck of a nice jump.

Is the second card seated properly? Usually the fans go 100% for the first second at bootup.. maybe the card is restarting?
