Drive won't spin. ... Options?

HardDrive doesn't spin what-so-ever. Is it possible that the drive's motherboard is the cause of this? - Would replacing the motherboard get the drive to spin, or is the power circuitry somewhere else?


If i've got a chance, where can I get a board for a WD 200 Gig, 7200RPM drive?

Swapping boards is really risky and 90% likely won't work.

Do you have another power supply you can try it on? Just plug it in and paperclip it to turn it on.
 
You can try posting it those specs in FS/T and see if anybody is willing to sacrifice a similar drive. However, I wouldn't throw down any cash at this problem yet.

Is it a new drive? Drive that just failed recently with a boatload of data on it that you need to get back?

Also, have you checked the easy stuff like cables/PSU? Not saying you're a n00b that wouldn't think to do that, but your post is quite vague. Post as much info about your situation as you can and we will try to help you out.

Uhm, it's not the computer's powersupply that doesn't work.
The *COMPUTER* system is working fine. ....
The DRIVE isn't powering up.


Drive is manufactured october 2003.
My S.O., who should know better. [She has a freaking dvd burner] did NOT backup HER computer. Before you say it, she's computer savvy, and KNOWS how to burn data.. Just.. arrgh.. stupid or something.

As for swapping boards being risky... What more risk could I possibly take.. The drive is GONE as it is.. The worst case scenario is "it still won't work"

I have an external HDD enclosure device, I tried putting it on that, and powering it up on that, and no go..

System which contains the HDD is working fine.
Two harddrives in system
Boot Drive [7200RPM, 60 GB]
Data Drive [7200RPM, 200GB, Western Digital WD2000JB-32FUA0]

System boots. 60 gig drive shows, and passes diagnostics
200 Gig drive is not recognized by bios. Was working fine yesterday.

Tried putting drive onto new cable, Tried putting drive onto Primary controller. No go. Doesn't recognize.

Powering up the drive, I cannot feel the little "internal vibration" that is normal with drives, from the platters spinning up. Diagnosis is that the drive is not powering up.

Drive is GETTING power [i.e. the 4 pin lead is good, as it powers up other devices...]

I don't know if the drives motor circuitry [not the physical part, but the part that feeds power to the servos, etc] is on the pcb that's "outside" the drive.. or if this means the S.O. has to spend $1,000s of dollars for a VERY expensive lesson that I've ALREADY TAUGHT HER. she's litterally seen over 100 dead harddrives before ...
 
It could also be that the "motor" seized up on it. If that's the case, no board swapping will fix it.
